Vaults are rooms that appear in indoor dungeons such as caves or mines in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.

A Vault.

They are always of the same shape -- a square room 4 tiles long and wide, full of in 15 Gitan Bags except for the upper-left-most tile, which has a permanent Spring Trap under a Asleep Monster from that floor. The room is almost always isolated from the rest of the dungeon, with no connecting hallways to the rest of the floor plan. Dungeon Shops can sometimes resemble a vault but the shopkeeper will be standing next to the items instead of being in the top left corner.

Finding a Vault

A Vault far away from the main floor.

With limited and basic items, Vaults can be very difficult to locate or access for a new player. They are usually out of view from natural hallways and therefore the player may not even know one is present on the floor. In the event that a vault is close enough to a room or hallway that it is visible, accessing it can be difficult, as there is no natural hallways that lead to it.

Some options for confirming the existence of a Vault on the floor are listed below:

Rarely, in the Ceremonial Cave bonus dungeon, a Vault will contain a Kigny Axe or a Kigny Shield instead of a Gitan Bag. This can only occur on floors 25-29.

Accessing a Vault

After locating a Vault or assuming that there is one, some ways to access it are listed below, ordered in each by category from generally most convenient/accessible to least:

  • Digging into the Vault using an Unbreakable Pickaxe or a Weapon with that Seal.
  • Digging into the Vault using a breakable Pickaxe, or a Weapon with that Seal before it breaks.

Item Strategies

  • Read a Great Hall Scroll or create one by writing "Great Hall" on a Blank Scroll and walk to where the Vault was.
  • Using a Switching Staff to trade places with a Monster inside the Vault when it is blocked on one side by water.
  • Use a Switching Staff on a Floating-Type monster that is over water while not having a Passage Armband is equipped so that Shiren will warp to a random location. This method is random and not guaranteed to work, as well as consuming valuable Staff uses.
  • Wearing a Passage Armband to enter when the Vault is accessible via water.
  • Unequipping a Passage Armband while Shiren is over will cause them to warp, potentially to the Vault, as well as being a convenient and sustainable method.
  • Using a Skull Staff on an Air Devil Family Monster, and hopefully the reflected bolt will have a warp effect, and teleport Shiren into the Vault.

Monster Strategies

  • Follow a tunnel dug by a Soldier Ant Family that leads into a Vault by chance.
  • Be hit by a Skull Mage Family staff charge, and randomly be warped into the Vault.
  • Be thrown by a Tiger Uho Family at the Monster inside the Vault when it may or may not be blocked on one side by water.[Data needed]
  • Be knocked back into the Vault by a Dremlas Family if one side is accessible by water.
  • Being knocked back by a Dremlas Family Monster onto water tile. Water will cause Shiren to warp to a random location, however, this is not guaranteed to work and the player will still have to search for the Dremlas to be warped again, as well as potentially breaking Jars and losing items if they are not careful.
  • Cause a Spike Bomb Family Monster to explode near the wall to access the Vault. While also being a dangerous method, this will need to be done multiple times to reach a Vault.
  • Coax a Popster Tank Family to blow up walls in order to access the Vault. This is a high-risk strategy as it requires Shiren to take explosion damage multiple times, which may also destroy Gitan contained in the Vault. As high-level Popster Tank Family Monsters move at high speeds, it's highly recommended not to perform this strategy with any of these Monsters higher than level 2. This destructive method may also have dangerous consequences.

Monster Meat Strategies

  • Eat Soldier Ant Family Meat and tunnel into the Vault. The Monster equivalent of using a Pickaxe.
  • Eat the Meat of a Monster that can move through walls, e.g. Pacorepkin Family, or level 3 - 4 Death Reaper Family, and revert once inside the Vault.
  • If one side of the Vault is surrounded by water, eat the Meat of a Floating-type Monster to enter. These monster families are listed below:
  • Eat Popster Tank Family Monster Meat and explode your way into the Vault, though this may also have dangerous consequences such as hitting a Shop, as well as potentially destroying some of the Gitan contained.
  • Eat level 3 - 4 Egg Thing Family Meat, then use its 'warp' ability repeatedly until Shiren is teleported into the Vault.
  • Eat level 2 - 4 Egg Thing Family Meat and allow a Monster to attack Monster-Shiren so that the player will warp, repeating this until Shiren is inside the Vault. This method also works for level 3 - 4, though Monster-Shiren can manually use a 'special' to warp as a Egg Thing Family or Egg Thing Family.
  • Explode the way into the Vault while transformed as a Spike Bomb Family Monster by being at low HP. This would require multiple explosions, and involves Shiren almost potentially being killed.
  • Alternatively floating Monster-Shiren can revert on top of water so that Shiren will warp to a random location and attempt to reach the Vault this way. This is not a sustainable nor guaranteed method and can be considered a waste of Monster Meat.

Trap Strategies

The following strategies require a Trap to be placed in a specific location. This placement can occur naturally in a dungeon, or be done by placing the desired trap down from the player's inventory as a Trap Master, created by a Mecharoid Family Monster, or monster-Shiren as a Mecharoid Family Monster.

  • Teleport randomly into the Vault using a Spring Trap.
  • Trigger a Log Trap from an appropriate direction so that Shiren is knocked into the Vault if it is blocked on that side by water. Alternatively be knocked back onto water so that Shiren will warp to a random location and attempt to reach the Vault this way.
  • Trigger a Landmine Trap or a Big Landmine Trap to explode the wall open to access a Vault.

Convenience/Accessibility Guidelines

  • A player may not have access to Monster Meat-producing items, especially at the start of the game, therefore Monster Meat strategies would be considered inconvenient and purchasing Meat from Shops can be expensive and unreliable.
  • The same applies for a Trap Armband as players may not have unlocked/completed Scroll Cave before encountering a Vault.
  • On top of not being able to produce Monster Meat, obtaining high-level Monster Meat also contributes to inaccessibility as there is a certain risk to fighting high level Monsters or travelling to the Locations where they spawn.
  • Methods that involve randomization such as warping are considered inconvenient based on the difficulty to continue repeating the randomized task. Some examples:
    • Monster Shiren manually warping as a Flying Egg or Hiding Egg (assuming this meat is already obtained) = extremely convenient.
    • Monster Shiren warping as an Egg Thing or Running Egg (Shiren still has to find Monsters on the floor in order to warp, wasting turns.) = somewhat convenient.
    • Shiren being warped by a Skull Mage's Staff bolt (Magic bolt may not always produce a warp effect, and moving to find the Skull Mage repeatedly wastes turns) = extremely inconvenient.
