Gitan (Japanese: ギタン) is the currency used in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. It can be used to purchase items, use services or thrown to damage Monsters. It can be found on the ground in dungeons, or obtained from Shopkeepers.

Use

As with items, Gitan bags can be picked up by stepping on them. If picked up, Gitan is added to the player's Gitan count on the top right of the screen. Bags won't be picked up if the player runs over them by holding B. Opening the menu and selecting "Ground" reveals the options the player has. In this game, Gitan bags can be swapped for an item in Shiren's inventory by swapping them with an item. Gitan can be inserted into Jars, from which it can then be tossed or taken out to be kept in the inventory. Sorting the inventory automatically will remove it from the inventory.

Tossing a Gitan bag at an enemy deals damage of amount/10 rounded down. This makes Gitan valuable not only for its spending power but also for its offensive power.

Quests

Gitan is required to finish the quests:

Additional Notes

  • Adventure Log entry #6 keeps track of the highest amount of Gitan the player has ever picked up.
  • If inserted into a Strengthening Jar, the Gitan will max out at 9,999.
  • Monsters in the Pickpocket Family will attempt to steal Shiren's Gitan. They'll stand on top of Gitan if they encounter it on the floor in a dungeon.
    • If they're defeated before stealing from him, they'll drop Gitan.
    • If they're successful, they'll teleport away, moving at double speed. They'll drop the stolen Gitan if defeated.
  • The amount of Gitan in the Shiren's possession is added to the player's score when they finish a dungeon.
  • Unlike later entries in the series, Shiren 1 doesn't feature a bank, Gitan vanishes from the player's inventory when they complete or fail in a dungeon.
  • The Time Attack mode penalizes the player with a 10-minute addition to their time if they don't have at least 10,000 Gitan upon completing the time attack.
