The Pickpocket (Japanese: ガマラ, Gamara Kei) Monster Family in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:
Monsters in this family resemble clasp purses where the clasp opening resembles a mouth, and move around on two small two-toed feet. All monsters in the pickpocket family have the same beige-colored clasp and feet, though the color of the purse material changes with monster level:
If unprovoked by Shiren, Pickpockets will seek out piles of Gitan on the floor and stand above them.
Pickpockets appear to never physically attack. Methods to induce an attack this has included Sealing the monster, Blind, inflicting the 'Kigny' status. In all attempts, the monster follows Shiren and does nothing, with the 'Seems to be waiting' message.
Pickpocket Family Monsters will drop a random amount of Gitan when defeated. This Gitan bag can also be a disguised N'Duba Family monster If the monster has stolen from Shiren, defeating it will drop the amount of Gitan that was initially stolen.
Pickpicket Family Monsters can steal Gitan that Shiren has collected in the top right corner of the screen (not Gitan bags held as items in the player's inventory) and instantly warp to a random location on the floor.
Initially, these monsters move at normal speed, though after successfully stealing and warping, they will move at Double Speed and avoid Shiren.
A Pickpocket that has stolen Gitan will still continue to run away even after it levels up or down into another Pickpocket Family Monster.
Pickpockets will no longer attempt to steal Gitan but will still not melee attack Shiren. Instead, they will follow Shiren around while they 'seem to be waiting'. They are also no longer interested in Gitan bags on the ground.
If the Pickpocket has already been stolen from Shiren, after sealing it will move at normal speed and no longer run away from Shiren. Defeating the monster will drop the amount of Gitan that was stolen.
Pickpocket Family Monsters do not attack but steal Gitan from the player.
If there isn't any Gitan on the ground nearby, or if Shiren is not already within 1 square of itself, they will seek out the player. When next to Shiren, they will attempt to steal collected Gitan and will immediately warp away. If Shiren does not have any Gitan, they will do nothing for that turn and will be "waiting".
As a Thief-type monster, Pickpocket thefts can be prevented by a
With such a Shield equipped, the Pickpocket will attempt to steal, but will fail and will not warp away.
Some preventative methods include:
If a monster is fleeing the player at Double Speed, Arrows, Monster Meat and Staves are some of the options for hunting them down. A Scroll of Light, Dark Owl Family Meat or an Armband of Sight can be very useful for locating the fast-moving monster. Reading a Great Hall Scroll can make it difficult for the thief to escape, though using this item isn't necessary for retrieving just a few hundred Gitan.
Pickpocket Family Monsters are the only monsters that allow Shiren to pick up items while transformed. By walking over piles of Gitan, they will be added to Shiren's collected Gitan in the top right corner of the screen. Shiren cannot attack while a Pickpocket, interacting with other entities will always be in an attempt to steal Gitan from them.
Meat from the Pickpocket Family has two popular uses:
When eaten, Shiren will transform into that type of monster and will be able to steal an amount of Gitan once, from every individual monster. This can accumulate thousands of Gitan quickly though because Shiren cannot fight in this form, it is advised to bring a Characters in your team to defeat monsters that have been stolen from. Otherwise it is common to be blocked by these monsters.
After consuming Pickpocket family monster meat, Shiren will transform and immediately attempt to steal from the monster the player is facing, and if successful, warp away. If the player finds themselves in a difficult situation, they can face one of the monsters, and consume the meat to warp away. Because the warping will take Shiren to a random location on the map, it can be risky to use this as an escape. This function can be used multiple times as long as the target monster has not already been stolen from.
