Movement Speed determines the rate at which Shiren and other entities move.
Movement Speed in Shiren
Movement Speeds
Shiren has 3 movement speeds - ‘Slow’, ‘Normal’, and ‘Double Speed, Double Attack’ - that are linked such that if Shiren is sped up from Slow twice in succession, his movement speed will change from Slow to Normal, and then from Normal to Double Speed, Double Attack. Both Slow and Double Speed, Double Attack are Status Abnormalities, called Slow and Double Speed, respectively; as such, Shiren will revert from both Slow and Double Speed, Double Attack to Normal in a number of turns - 10 and 6, respectively. When transformed into a monster, either by monster meat or Skull Wizard magic, if Shiren’s movement speed is increased or decreased past the monster’s innate movement speed, it will similarly return to its original movement speed in a few turns.
Slow
Slow allows Shiren to have 1 move every 2 turns. When Shiren’s movement speed is Slow, his movement will return to Normal in 10 turns. If Shiren is transformed into a Popster Tank, his innate movement speed will be Slow.
Normal
Normal allows Shiren to have 1 move every 1 turn. If Shiren is transformed into a monster with Normal, his innate movement speed will be Normal. Shiren’s movement speed will be Normal after reviving by Herb of Revival, transformed as an Evil Soldier monster, being rescued, and possessing a monster when transformed as a Dead Soldier monster. Changing floors resets movement speed to Normal. Being transformed into a monster, as well as reverting back into Shiren, resets movement speed to Normal. If Shiren is Slow, a Scroll of Need may restore his movement speed to Normal.
Double Speed, Double Attack
Double Speed, Double Attack allows Shiren to have 2 moves every 1 turn. When Shiren’s movement speed is Double Speed, Double Attack, it will return to Normal in 6 turns. If Shiren is transformed into a monster with Double Speed, Double Attack or Double Speed, Single Attack, his innate movement speed will be Double Speed, Double Attack.
Increasing Movement Speed
Shiren’s movement speed will increase if he is hit by a Skull Mage’s magic, or when an Accelerating Staff is reflected by an Air Devil monster.
Decreasing Movement Speed
Shiren’s movement speed will decrease when triggering a Slowness Trap, being hit by a Poison Herb from Ghost Radish monsters or using one, getting hit by a Skull Wraith’s magic, or when either a Skull Staff or Staff of Sloth is reflected by an Air Devil monster.
Movement speed in other entities
Movement Speeds
Other entities have 4 movement speeds - ’Slow’, ‘Normal’, ‘Double Speed, Single Attack’, and ‘Double Speed, Double Attack’ - that are linked such that if sped up from Slow thrice, their movement speed will change from Slow to Normal, from Normal to Double Speed, Single Attack, and from Double Speed, Single Attack to Double Speed, Double Attack. Unlike Shiren, other entities do not return to their innate movement speed after a few turns, so changes in movement speed are permanent, unless changed again.
Double Speed, Single Attack
This is the only movement speed unique to other entities. It allows 2 moves every 1 turn, but their turn ends whenever they attack or use a special ability, regardless of a remaining move. As such, they can either move twice, move once and attack once, or attack once on their turn.
In Monsters
Despite being able to attack multiple times in a turn, Knifegator monsters have a movement speed of Normal, and their multiple attacks are an ability used in 1 move. Similarly, Polygon Spin monsters can warp in front of Shiren when in the same room, but this only counts as one move. Running Eggs are able to warp away after attacked, and move twice, whereas Flying Eggs that warp when Shiren is within 3 spaces, can warp as a result of proximity, and move only once more (this means a Flying Egg can warp from being hit, and warp twice more from proximity, all in 1 turn). Thiefwalrus monsters will count warping as a result of thievery from Shiren or taking an item from the ground as a move. Pickpocket monsters are able to warp and move once more if originally Normal, though this is due to their movement being increased by 1 stage post-theft, (if they steal when Slow, or after having expended both moves when either Double Speed, Single Attack or Double Speed, Double Attack, they will not move after warping). If monsters are sealed, either by Skull Wraith Magic, Sealing Staff, Curse Trap or Unequip Trap, their innate movement will be set to Normal - the amount of stages that they have been sped up/down remain, such that a Popster Tank sped up twice and then sealed goes from Slow, to Normal, to Double speed, Single attack, and then to Double Speed, Double Attack. If a monster Levels up, they will not move again for the turn, aside from Kigny and Inferno monsters.
In Characters
Characters have an innate movement speed of Slow, but sealing them will not reset it to Normal. When characters become allies/escorts, any Status Abnormalities will be removed, and their speed will be set to Normal, with no speed ups/downs retained.
Increasing Movement Speed
Movement speed will increase if hit by Skull Mage magic or Accelerating Staff. Reading a Scroll of Sleep will speed up entities after 14 moves of the individual entities, and Scroll of Haste will also, but characters will only be affected by Scroll of Sleep and Scroll of Haste if aggravated first.
Decreasing Movement Speed
Movement speed will decrease when triggering a Slowness Trap in Trap Master mode, though characters are only affected by thrown traps, getting hit by a Poison Herb, getting hit by a Skull Wraith’s magic, Skull Staff or Staff of Sloth.
