Rescues are a feature in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. When Shiren collapses on an Adventure, the player has the choice of being rescued, allowing the adventure to be picked off where it was left off with everything intact, instead of starting all over again with nothing left. Up to 3 rescue requests are availalble per adventure. After exhausting all 3, you must give up and receive a score for the adventure. The player receives Rescue Reward Items when completing rescues.

While each password rescue can only be attempted 5 times, the game only stores up to 30 passwords, so it is possible to attempt the same password again after entering 30 different rescue passwords.

Rescues can also be used to obtain specific items from dungeons. See Rescue Passwords for Items. Additionally, players can rescue themselves using the unofficial tool Rescue Password Generator available on this wiki.

Requesting a Rescue

Note: The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (NWFC) service is no longer available. Thus, rescue by NWFC is no longer possible.

To request a rescue, select "Traveler Rescue" from the main menu. Then select "Be rescued". Select "Send a rescue request". You have 3 options:

  • Rescue by local wireless: Connect to someone nearby with another DS and another Mystery Dungeon game cart.
  • Rescue by password: The game will generate a 56 character password. You can post this on, for example, an online forum if you do not have access to Nintendo Wi-fi Connection.
  • Rescue by NWFC: You can choose to be rescued by someone on your friend code list or by anyone. If you choose anyone, you will post a rescue request on the official Mystery Dungeon NWFC rescue list. Anyone with the game can access the list from in the game and rescue you. A very streamlined process, and has benefits. You can select one of the preset messages to send as well. You will be given a unique 12-digit rescue number for your record, if you also want to post this on an online forum.

There are other differences between these different methods. By local Wi-Fi or NWFC, your rescuer can send you a helpful item from their storehouse in Canyon Hamlet, and you can send your rescuer a reward from your storehouse in Canyon Hamlet. With a password, you cannot do this, and you cannot attach any messages to your rescue requests.

Afterwards, you can check up on the status of your rescue request by selecting "Receive Revival Spell" from the menu. It will tell you if someone has accepted your rescue request or have sent you a revival spell.

While awaiting a rescue, you cannot adventure. You may give up the rescue request if you wish to do so by selecting "Awaiting rescue" and selecting the option given. However, if you have cleared the main adventure, you can also choose to do a limited adventure while awaiting rescue. You start in your storehouse at Canyon Hamlet and you can choose to adventure on any dungeons that you have unlocked. You can only go up as far as you have gone in those dungeons, and afterwards you will return to the storehouse and you get to keep the items you had at that point. The Adventure Log will not be updated during these adventures, and you cannot request a rescue if you die.

After you are rescued, be sure to send your rescuer a Thank You letter! Select "Send thank you letter" after selecting "Be rescued". Again, you have the different options available to do this.

Note: You cannot request a rescue if you died outside a dungeon or during a theft. Rescue is also not possible in Fay's Puzzles.

Doing a Rescue (How to do it, and what's in it for me?)

Apart from being a good Samaritan, there are also tangible benefits from doing rescues. For a successful rescue, you will immediately receive a reward from Hoi the Missionary. If the person you rescued sends you a Thank You letter, you will receive another item. If s/he also attaches a reward item from his/her storehouse, that's 3 reward items in total! You also get to keep all items you have on hand at the end of a successful rescue.

To do a rescue, select "Traveler Rescue" from the main menu. Then select "Rescue". Select "Receive a rescue request". You have the choice of receiving a rescue request by local wireless, password, or NWFC. For local wireless, connect to someone with a game cart nearby. For password, enter the 36 character password.

For NWFC, you have the following options:

  • Rescue a friend: Check if someone on your friend code list has posted a rescue request.
  • Rescue by request order: Receive a list of rescues by order of most recent rescue requests to oldest rescue requests from top to bottom.
  • Rescue by player number: Receive a list of rescues by order of the player's number (?).
  • Rescue by input number: Type in a specific 12-digit rescue number.

If you rescue by NWFC from the list, you have the option to select up to 5 rescues by using the R-button and then A-button to accept. As you open up new dungeons, you will have the opportunity to rescue people from there as well.

After you received a rescue request, talk to Hoi the Missionary at Canyon Hamlet and select the rescue you want to do. For some Bonus Dungeons you may not bring any items so be sure to put them in the storehouse if you are doing rescues for those dungeons.

Your goal is to touch the fallen Shiren at the level he died on. You can try again for up to 3 times on Table Mountain or Tainted Path rescues, and up to 5 times on other dungeon rescues. If you lose all your chances of rescuing, then you will not be able to do that rescue again.

After successfully completing the rescue, you will be sent to the main menu. Send a revival spell by selecting "Traveler Rescue", then "Rescue", then "Send Revival Spell". You have the same options for the method of communication. If you send by NWFC, you can attach a preset message and an item from your storehouse at Canyon Hamlet if you want to give the rescued Shiren a little help on his adventure.

You can receive a thank you letter by selecting "Traveler Rescue", then "Rescue", then "Receive thank you letter".

Special notes about rescue requests:

  • You can only have up to 5 rescues in your queue. Rescues will automatically be removed from the queue if you successfully complete the rescue and receive a thank you letter, but you can also manually delete them by selecting "Manage rescues". Use the R-button to select more than one to delete.
  • You can only rescue people up to the floor level that you have gone through yourself. The rescues of higher floor levels will not show up on the NWFC lists and you will not be allow to do them even if you type in the specific password or rescue number.
  • Only up to 5 wanderers can attempt to rescue a person over NWFC. If you have 5 wanderers on the way but they all fail, you will have to resubmit the rescue request. Do this by requesting a rescue by friends or anyone, whichever you did not choose last time.

Special notes about rescuing:

  • If you die during a rescue, you will lose everything on hand and you cannot request a rescue.
  • All item and floor layouts are the same every time you try the rescue.
  • You will not be able to stop at any safe areas like villages.
  • No Character's appear during rescues.
  • On the final floor level of the rescue, you will always find the fallen Shiren surrounded by monsters, or in a monster house if in a cave or mine.
  • For rescues on Table Mountain and Tainted Path, you start on 1F Old Cedar Road.
  • For rescues on Ravine of the Dead and Ceremonial Cave you start on the first floor of those instead.
  • For a rescue on Tainted Path, Tainted Insects will not appear.
  • If you receive a reward item, you must have space in your storehouse at Canyon Hamlet, or you must choose to throw away an item from there or the reward item.
