The Spiked Ward (Japanese: バトルカウンター) is a Shield in  Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. It bears the (Spiked) Rune which deals 30% of physical damage to Shiren by entities directly next to them, to the attacker.

Physical attacks from monsters inside walls will also take return damage. When Shiren is attacked by Ironhead Family Monsters from one square away, the monster will not take recoil damage, though when attacked while next to Shiren, they will.

Limitations

• Attacks with fixed damage such as Dragon-type Monster fire, or Exploding-type Monster explosions will not return damage to the attacker.
• Ranged, though non-fixed damage attacks that are performed while next to Shiren will not cause the monster to take recoil damage.

Tips For Use

• Combine a shield with a Spiked Ward in a Melding Jar to add the seal to the shield.
• Because returned damage is calculated based on how much damage is taken, it may be a good idea for the shield with a seal to have low defensive power, as a powerful shield continues to only deliver a damage return of 1.
