The Melding Jar (Japanese: 合成の壺) is a Jar in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. Inserting two or more items of the same type into a Melding Jar will combine them into a single item, melding their bonuses, charges, and/or effects.

Items that can be upgraded using Melding Jars are:

Weapons: The first item placed into the jar will absorb all others inserted subsequently, absorbing their upgrade power and any Runes.

Shields: The first item placed into the jar will absorb all others inserted subsequently, absorbing their upgrade power and any seals.

Staves: Multiples of the same staff will be combined inside a Melding Jar, and the numbers of their charges/uses will added together.

Limitations

  • Placing items other than these into a Melding Jar will have no effect, but will consume one of the jar's slots.
  • Items can still be combined even if they are Unidentified.
  • Items from a Shops that have not been paid for will not combine with other items.
  • One Melding Jar can be used to combine multiple types of items together, as long as there are enough slots within the jar.
  • If an item with a seal is combined with another item that already contains that seal, there will be no effect and the seal will be wasted.

Removing Items

Items cannot be retrieved from a Melding Jar unless the jar is thrown and breaks or an Extraction Scroll is used on the jar. Using an Extraction Scroll is considered a waste as it will only conserve a slot in the jar for every item that is removed. E.g. after 5 weapons are combined into one, and an Extraction Scroll removes this weapon, there will only be one empty slot conserved in the jar.

Adventure Log Entries

Adventure Log entry #61 requires the player to 'Power-throw a Melding Jar'. This requires the player to throw a Melding Jar while a non-cursed Pitcher's Armband is equipped, sending the jar flying away, where it's contents cannot be retrieved. It is highly recommended to do this with an empty Melding Jar. Occasionally this is done by accident, or with an unidentified Armband equipped.

Adventure Log entries #66 - 69 require the player to have created a powerful weapon, shield, and a many-use staff. This can be done slowly by using Melding Jars, or alternatively, a Strengthening Jar if one is available.

Tips For Use

  • Powerful equipment or staves can be created cost-effectively by melding randomly found weapons and shields together to combine their power. This is an alternative to using Air Bless Scrolls, Earth Bless Scrolls and paying 1,000 Gitan to Smiths to upgrade equipment.
