Gaibara's Pottery (Japanese: ???) is a side quest in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.

Upon interacting with Gaibara for the first time he will destroy a jar in Shiren's inventory, then apologize. He will over to give you "his masterpiece" when it is completed. Visit him over the course of several more adventures to see amusing scenes of the strange jars he creates, eventually culminating with the creation of the Melding Jar.

Location: Mountaintop Town, Gaibara's house
Requirements: 2 Adequate Jars (See: Gaibara's Pottery#Adequate Jars). Gaibara will destroy the first jar
Minimum duration: 5 adventures for the Melding Jar, 7 for Scroll Cave and/or Kitchen God.
Rewards:

Required for:

  • Unlocking the Kitchen God dungeon (having Gaibara break Shiren's first Jar)
  • Unlocking the Scroll Cave dungeon

Note: Adequate Jars

Some events are triggered by the presence of certain jars in Shiren's inventory, Gaibara will notice this jar and ask to take it. Most jars that the player would have access to before this event, will be noticed by Gaibara, however, there are some jars that prompt no reaction from him.

He will prioritize adequate jars at the end of the inventory first.

Guide to unlock the Melding Jar

Steps are organized to complete the quest in minimal adventures.

First Adventure

First Adventure - Bring Adequate Jar
  • Bring an adequate Jar that Gaibara will notice and bring it Gaibara's house in Mountaintop Town.

Gaibara's house is the large building in the bottom right of Mountaintop Town, walk up the wooden platform to enter. Gaibara is unhappy with his jar creations, so he throws them at the wall. He will notice Shiren's jar and ask to look at it.

  • Give Gaibara the Jar. It will be destroyed and the contents will not drop.

Second Adventure

Second Adventure - Visit Gaibara
  • Visit Gaibara.

This time he's produced a Pointless Jar. Once again, Gaibara throws and breaks it.

Third Adventure

Third Adventure - Bring Adequate Jar
  • Bring an adequate Jar that Gaibara will notice to trigger this event.
  • Visit Gaibara.

This time he's produced an Unbreakable Jar, however, when he throws it, it does as its name implies and does not break. Angered, Gaibara will take Shirens jar to throw, but has learned his lesson and gives it back to Shiren.

If you enter Gaibara's house without an adequate jar, Saruyama will not bring out the Unbreakable Jar, and will tell Shiren to wait longer for Gaibara's masterpiece.

Forth Adventure

Fourth Adventure - Visit Gaibara
  • Visit Gaibara.

He has produced a Venting Jar this time, and it is happy with it, but cannot resist throwing it, and he and Saruyama are left in shock by the resulting explosion.

Fifth Adventure

Fifth Adventure - Collect Melding Jar
  • Visit Gaibara.

The Melding Jar finally is ready for Shiren to take. You can talk to Gaibara to learn how to use Melding Jars.

You obtain the Melding Jar [5]. From the next adventure onwards, the Jar Shop in Mountaintop Town will be open.

Sixth Adventure

On this adventure, you can still talk to Gaibara to learn how to use Melding Jars. The Mountaintop Town Jar Shop is now open, containing 6 items, ranging from Melding Jars, Jars of Holding, Chiropractic Jars, and Jars of Change.

Gaibara's actions on the next adventure will depend on whether the Naoki and The Cliffs quest and the main quest, Table Mountain have been completed.

Seventh Adventure

If any one of Gaibara's Pottery quest, Naoki and the Cliffs quest, or the main adventure-Table Mountain, has not been completed, nothing different will happen. If else, the Kitchen God dungeon will be unlocked.

Bamboo Village - Kitchen God

Seventh Adventure - Kitchen God

As long as Gaibara has had at least one adventure to offer information about the Melding Jar (Sixth Adventure), Naoki and the Cliffs, and Table Mountain are all complete when going to Bamboo Village, the citizens are in shock as lightning has hit the shrine to the Kitchen God, Bufu behind the village. The Shopkeeper's Wife will tell Shiren that someone went down there, looking for rare Meat, who claimed to be a "wandering chef". Koppa will assume it's Naoki and wonders if they should follow him.

You can now enter the Kitchen God dungeon

Mountaintop Town - Scroll Cave

Seventh Adventure - Scroll Cave

As long as Gaibara has had at least one adventure to offer information about the Melding Jar (Sixth Adventure), Naoki and the Cliffs, and Table Mountain are all complete, Gaibara will have has descended into the cave within his house. Saruyama will now remain inside the building.

You can now enter the Scroll Cave dungeon
