Shiren 1 DS:Curse
Cursed (Japanese: 呪い) items are a game mechanic in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. They will appear differently than others, with a skull item icon and a red name. These items are cursed, which affects their use.
Items in Shiren's inventory can be cursed by Curse Girl Family Monsters or when a Curse Trap is triggered without a Curseless Armband equipped.
When an item is cursed, a variety of negative effects can occur, some of which can be considered positive.
Cursed items bought or sold from Shops are 10% off the original price, rounded down.
Items cannot be used
While cursed, items cannot be used.
- Herb: Herbs can't be eaten when they're cursed. No effect when thrown.
- Scrolls: Scrolls can't be read when cursed.
- Staff: Staves can't be swung when cursed. Throwing the staff will have no effect.
- Riceball: Riceballs can't be eaten when cursed.
- Meat: Monster meat can't be eaten when cursed. No effect when thrown.
- Arrows: Arrows can't be fired when cursed. When you have a stack of arrows and pick up more, they'll be combined into one stack. If you pick up cursed arrows when you have un-cursed arrows in your inventory, they'll be combined and will no longer be cursed.
- Jar: Items cannot be inserted into jars when cursed. For a Jar of Holding, items cannot be taken out of it either. For press-type jars such as Chiropractic Jars, they cannot be pressed. Some special Jars will not have their normal effect when thrown, and items can still be retrieved when breaking the jar.
Items lose their effects
- Weapon: Weapon Runes no longer function. The sword strength of a Fragile Edge won't weaken with use.
- Shield: Shield seals no longer function. The shield strength of a Fragile Shield won't weaken with use. and the negative effects of an Armor Ward will no longer reduce Shiren's Fullness.
- Armband: Armband abilities will no longer function when cursed.
Items cannot be unequipped
Cursed equipment cannot be taken off by normal means, even when Shiren is Hypnotized into trying to remove cursed equipment.
The only methods to remove cursed items, aside from removing the curse and unequipping normally are listed here:
- Trigger a Unequip Trap
- Have the cursed Weapon and Shield knocked away from Shiren by a Cell Armor Family
These methods will remove the cursed item, but destroy it in the process:
- Turn the item into a Big Riceball with a Riceball Scroll.
- A Item Bandit or Trove Bandit weed curse ability can turn cursed equipped items into Weeds.
Removing Curses
- Read a Scroll of Blessing to remove a curse from a selected item, and occasionally remove curses from all items not in jars.
- Eating Curse Girl Family Monster Meat will work as if the player had read a Blessing Scroll which always has the rare effect of blessing all items, not in jars.
- Scroll of Need while Shiren has cursed items equipped, to remove the curses.
- Talking to the Characters after throwing a Scroll of Blessing at him once, will bless all of Shiren's items.
