Item Identification in Etrian Mystery Dungeon entails items whose name and effects, and number of uses for Sigils, are hidden. Scrolls and sigils are unidentified in Mysterious Forest and Phantom Depths. Bottles are unidentified in Phantom Depths. The names used to hide the real names of items are random and are unkept from one dungeon exploration to the next, however once an item is identified or renamed all items of the same type will be known. When an item is unidentified, its icon is replaced by Etrian 1 - Unidentified Icon.png.

Tips to identify items

General Tips

Assess Scrolls can be used to identify one item and has a low chance of identifying all items. If you find a Red Lion Shoppe you can try to sell items to know their selling price. It can be used to reduce the number of possibilities on the identity of the object. At the end of the dungeons, when entering Aslarga, every item in the inventory will be identified.

Bottles

A way of knowing the effect of a Bottles without using it, is to throw a bottle that you have spares of at a monster and rename it when you know what are its effects.

Scrolls

When using a Scroll, every other scroll of the same type will be identified. To reduce risks, scrolls should be read while standing on a staircase so you can move to another floor. Moreover, every Scrolls with negative effects have a selling price of 50 Ental.

Sigils

Sigils all have the same selling price, so the only way to identify them without the Assess Scroll is to use them on a monster and rename the Sigil when you know what are its effects.

Unidentified Items Name List

For a full list of names that can be used to hide the real name of unidentified items, see: List of Unidentified Item Names. As the names used to hide the real names of items are random and are unkept from one dungeon exploration to the next this cannot be used to identify items.
