Cresselia first appears in a cutscene hunting Darkrai. She appears in the dream of the Hero a few times, to get rid of them, stating that they are the cause of the unbalance of the Pokémon world. In Azurill's Nightmare, she wanted to get rid of the Hero and their Partner but was stopped because of Drowzee.
She doesn't appear again until the conversation between Palkia, the Hero and, their Partner. It's later revealed by the real Cresselia to have been Darkrai all along. Afterward, she cures Azurill of the nightmare and tells the Hero) and Partner), that she will be joining them against Darkrai at Dark Crater. She waits for them at Sharpedo Bluff.
When facing Darkrai, she's unable to release the Hero from their nightmare. After the battle is won, she waits at Sharpedo Bluff and offers to join the Hero's Exploration Team. If accepted, Cresselia will join the team and disappear from Sharpedo Bluff, while if you deny her, she will stay in Sharpedo Bluff until you have a change of heart.
To continue with the post game, the protagonist must talk to Cresselia and either accept her or deny her as a team member or else Manaphy won't contact you the next day to inform about the new dungeon.
