Scroll Cave (Japanese: 掛軸裏の洞窟) is a bonus dungeon in Shiren 1 emphasizing offensive use of Traps against Monsters. The floor map refers to it as "Scroll Cave" but on the top screen location map it is called "Cave Behind the Scroll". Main features of the Scroll Cave in the Nintendo DS make were not present in the Version Differences of the game, including trap multiplier mechanics, the Trap Armband and Mecharoid Family Meat.

Gaining Access

The entrance to this dungeon is in Mountaintop Town, inside Gaibara the Legendary Potter's pottery dojo. You must complete the Gaibara's Pottery as well as the Naoki and The Cliffs side quests and clear Table Mountain, then visit Gaibara again to unlock access to this dungeon.

Unique Features

items and Gitan will be discarded when entering, but levels are retained. All 4 allies can be taken into the dungeon.

You start the dungeon with a Trap Armband equipped, which turns Shiren into a Trap Master. Traps can now be used against Monsters which radically changes gameplay.

  • You can now see all traps.
  • Traps can be picked up as items and functional when placed down.
  • Shiren is no longer affected by traps, but monsters are (unless they are airborne; see below).
  • When monsters step on traps, they gain a 'trap multiplier' a value that determines how many times of the default monster's Experience Shiren will receive when they are defeated. This multiplier has a maximum value of x20 and will decrease with every square the monster steps on that does not have a trap on it.
A Mamel with a multiplier of x2, after stepping on an Unequip Trap. Defeating this Mamel will reward 4 experience points, double the normal amount for Mamels.
  • With a Trap Armband equipped, defeating a monster without a multiplier will only reward 1 experience point.

There are Scrolls exclusive to this dungeon which aid the use of the Trap Armband.

  • A Super Trap Scroll will cause Floating-type monsters to be vulnerable to traps for one floor.
  • A Scroll of Chains fills a room's floor with 'trap chain spaces' that will not deplete the trap multiplier when a monster steps on them.

There is also a Scroll of Traps which adds 29 - 30 random traps to the floor.

Goal and Final Reward

The goal is to find Gaibara. He appears randomly starting from 15 Fl. This dungeon doesn't have a boss monster. If you succeed, the reward item is a Venting Jar.

Farming Opportunities

By intentionally being defeated on floor 2 - 3, then selecting 'Adventure while Awaiting Rescue' in the Nintendo DS version of Template:GameTitle, the player can enter the dungeon, move through the first few floors before where they died, and be brought back to the Warehouse in Canyon Hamlet to store their items.

  • You are given a Trap Armband every time you enter, and the only Armbands found in the dungeon are Trap Armbands.
  • Scrolls of Chains and Super Trap Scrolls are exclusive to this dungeon, though after one of each is read, there will be less need to collect more as they can be created using a Blank Scroll.
  • Accelerating Staff are exclusive to this dungeon and the Final Puzzle, and can be collected to enhance the combat ability of allies.

Strategies

No level is required to enter, and in the Super Famicom version Shiren's level was reset to 1 by entering. In the DS version you can retain your level for this dungeon, so unless you're deliberately trying to challenge yourself or if you are performing a rescue, it is suggested that you level up to 18 - 20 before attempting this dungeon.

Wearing the Trap Armband is optional, and its experience penalty when defeating enemies without traps is frequently undesirable. When fighting enemies that are not worth spending a trap on, it is better to either unequip the armband and defeat them conventionally, or use a Rotten Trap to convert them into Rotten Riceballs which can be used as either emergency food or fodder for Jars of Change.

Hunger is a major concern in this dungeon due to the limited availability of Riceballs. While collecting traps on the early floors, keep an eye out for a Riceball Trap. When you've found one, level up a Rice Baby with it and proceed to let the Rice Changer breathe on 5 or 6 of your items. At this point, experience is not a concern, so only collect traps that will help you survive the last floors, such as traps that seal or instantly kill monsters. If you find a weapon that's not a Pickaxe and a decent shield along the way, you shouldn't have much trouble beating this dungeon. It is in your best interest to talk to Gaibara and leave when the opportunity presents itself, as unlike the Final Puzzle, this dungeon does not provide you with sufficient resources to muscle past monsters on the later floors.

Traps that spawn naturally on the floor will not break unless Shiren picks them up and puts them back down again. Depending on their position, some traps (especially One-Way Traps) can be used to raise a monster's experience multiplier all the way up to 20x. Rotten Traps will also yield more Rotten Riceballs when left in their original position. If you need to move over a trap without picking it up, pass over it by dashing.

If you find the experience of being in the Scroll Cave dull, try to leave with multiple Trap Armbands.
