Team Meanies (Japanese: イジワルズ, Ijiwarus) is a Rescue Team led by Gengar in Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team. The three members of the team are the aforementioned Gengar, Ekans and Medicham.

Biography

Name Etymology

The Japanese name (Japanese: イジワルズ) follows a common Team naming pattern seen in the series. It takes the Japanese word 意地悪, meaning "mean",[1] spelled in katakana, and adds a pluralizing ズ character at the end, mimicking plurals in the English language.

History

Many years ago, a human and his partner Gardevoir entered a sacred dungeon, greedy of the rare Pokémon living in it. They encountered Ninetales, and the trainer grabbed one of its tails. Ninetales cast a curse on that human, but Gardevoir sacrificed herself and absorbed his curse. Ninetales asked the human if he wanted to save Gardevoir, but he had already fled. Ninetales then said that the human shall turn into a Pokémon one day, and will make the balance of the world upset, bringing many natural disasters. Gengar is the human in the curse - the one in The Legend of Ninetales.

Story Relevance

Gengar first enters as the leader of Team Meanies, stealing the Hero's mail inside their mailbox. Luckily, Pelipper shows up and delivers more mail. Caterpie asks the players team to rescue their friend, Metapod. Gengar returns with the other team members of Team Meanies, attempting to go rescue Metapod instead of the Rescue Team, saying they will force Caterpie to join their team. At the deepest part of the Sinister Woods, they appeared again as the dungeon bosses. Once defeated, Metapod is successfully rescued and escorted out of the dungeon. For more on the boss fight in Sinister Woods, see: Team Meanies.

Gengar overhearing the player and Xatu's conversation.

Gengar later overhears the conversation between the player and Xatu where Xatu explains that the player's character was once a human as well. He convinces the Pokémon in the Pokémon Square to chase the player and their partner out, saying that the player is the human in the Legend of Ninetales and the cause of the natural disasters.

While the player is on the run, Gengar hangs around in Pokémon Square but doesn't do anything to contribute to the chase, saying he is only going to receive information from other rescue teams. When he sees the player re-entering the square and confirms that they are not the human in the Ninetales Legend, he and the other members of Team Meanies are chased out instead.

Later on, while the player is dreaming, Gengar enters the player's dream, turning it into a Nightmare. He's chased away crying when he notices Gardevoir coming. When the player and partner need to reach Sky Tower, Xatu and Alakazam, with help from Gengar create the Teleport Gem.

After Rayquaza destroyed the falling star and the player ended up in the netherworld because of the aftermath of the explosion, he attempts to drag the player into the world of darkness, but he forgets the path, so he decided to dump the player alone there. After a change of heart, he went back and saved the player, likely because Gardevoir had appeared in their dreams. In addition, he also saved the player's partner and team members.

Rescue Gardevoir

For more on this quest, see: Rescue Gardevoir.

After the credits roll, Gengar asks the player to escort him onto the peak of Mt. Freeze, revealing that he is the human that fled in the Ninetales Legend and is the trainer of Gardevoir. Ninetales gave him the 9-Tail Crest and sends him to Murky Cave. At the deepest floor of Murky Cave, Gardevoir is revived and released from the curse but had lost all memories about her past with Gengar. She asks who Gengar is, and Gengar replied sadly: 'The name is Gengar.' After which, he is not seen again then.
