The MDFW - Documenting Mystery Dungeon since 2008.
The Mamel monster Family (Japanese: マムル系, Mamuru Kei) is a Monster family in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. It consists of:
- Mamel (Japanese: マムル, Mamuru)
- Pit Mamel (Japanese: あなぐらマムル, Anagura Mamuru)
- Cave Mamel (Japanese: 洞窟マムル, Dōkutsu Mamuru)
- Gitan Mamel (Japanese: ギタンマムル, Gitan Mamuru)
These monsters have a smooth spherical body, and a white widening tail, belly and cat ears. With a slightly agape mouth showing a pink or blue tongue and wide eyes, the color of the monster's back depends on the level:
- Sky blue
- Olive green
- Red
- Yellow
The Mamel is likely the first, and the weakest monster players run into on their Shiren adventures. At level 4, Gitan Mamels have a few differences compared to Mamel Family monsters levels 1 - 3, it has a slightly yellow belly, tail, and ears, and unlike levels 1-3, has a blue, tongue.
When attacking, Mamel Family Monsters leap up into their target and quickly land back in their original position.
Monster Ability
- Levels 1 - 3: no special abilities or traits
- Level 4: Gitan Mamels naturally move at Double Speed and have extremely high defense.
Effect when Sealed
- Levels 1 - 3: No difference.
- Level 4: Gitan Mamels will now move and attack at normal speed.
Special Drops
Gitan Mamels (level 4) will drop 2,000 Gitan on defeat unless the have had their Gitans or item stolen by a Thief-Type monster or knocked away by a Cell Armor Family
Combat Strategy
- Levels 1 - 3: A generally weak monster with no special abilities to be cautious of. Mamels and Pit Mamels can easily be defeated even without any equipment. Cave Mamels can pose more of a threat, with a higher attack of ~35 to 40 damage without having a shield equipped, but this is to be expected of a level 3 monster. Nonetheless, it is best to have a strong shield to endure any unexpectedly high attacks.
- A Spiked Ward or a shield with such ability can easily reflect enough damage to instantly defeat a Cave Mamel.
- A Poison Herb can be thrown at a Cave Mamel, and if it successfully hits, will inflict 5 damage, which is enough to defeat it.
- Level 4: Gitan Mamels have exceedingly high defense, despite only having 6 HP, even a hit from a +119 strength Sword only does 1 damage, meaning multiple hits will be necessary to defeat them. They also have high attack and move at double Speed, so fighting them from afar may be a good option using Staves, Arrows, Monster Meat etc., though they will be quick to close the distance between then and Shiren. Or, if desired, Monster Meat of a weak monster can be thrown to transform it into a more easily defeated form.
- A Spiked Ward can easily reflect a Gitan Mamel's damage and defeat it after one attack, as long as Shiren survives. If a Spiked Ward ability is not available, a strong shield is highly recommended to endure any accidental hits.
- As with a Cave Mamel, a Poison Herb that successfully hits a Gitan Mamel will deal 5 of the 6 required damage to defeat it while also lowering its Strength by 1 point; where the Gitan Mamel will then do ~45 attack damage per hit.
Meat Strategy
- Levels 1 - 3: With no special abilities, there is no specific benefit to consuming Mamel Family Monster Meat. Instead, low-level monster meat can be thrown to transform other monsters into a more easily defeated form, However, there is a chance that the Meat will miss, so it is best to do this at a distance and/or not to rely on it. There are some qualities to consuming any monster meat in general:
- Eating any Monster Meat will increase current Fullness by 10 points, with the exception of Hen meat, which will increase current fullness by 100 points.
- As a monster, items in Shiren's inventory cannot be accessed, and therefore items cannot be: equipped, unequipped, put down, thrown, eaten, dropped, Projectiles, inserted or removed from Jars and jars also cannot be pressed.
- However, Items and Gitan can still be stolen by Thief-Type monsters, items can still be Melding and Seals, become Cursed, be turned into Big Riceball, become Miscellaneous Items, be changed into Weeds or be knocked away.
- As a monster, items in Shiren's inventory cannot be accessed and therefore items cannot be: equipped, unequipped, put down, thrown, eaten, dropped, fired, inserted, or removed from jars and jars also cannot be pressed.
- When transforming or reverting into a monster, all Status Conditions can be cured, however, statuses that prevent the player from acting to perform these actions cannot conventionally be cured in any way.
- Level 4: Because Gitan Mamels move at double speed, this can be taken advantage of to escape from enemies, or to have a speed advantage while fighting. Consuming Gitan Mamel Meat may be considered a waste as the 2,000 Gitan that would normally drop on that monster's defeat, will not drop when it is Shiren that was transformed. This meat and the Gitan it provides can be semi-effectively farmed using a Pitcher's Armband and a Bufu's Staff, a Sword with this ability is also adequate, but caution should be taken as Gitan Mamels are prone to 1-hit KO low-level players without proper protection.
