The Mamel (Japanese: マムル, Mamul) Monster Family is the mascot monster family of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995, making it one of the Original Monster Families.

The Mamel Family consists of:

  1. Mamel (Japanese: マムル, Mamul)
  2. Pit Mamel (Japanese: あなぐらマムル, Anagura Mamuru)
  3. Cave Mamel (Japanese: 洞窟マムル, Dōkutsu Mamuru)
  4. Gitan Mamel (Japanese: ギタンマムル, Gitan Mamuru)

Related additional families include the Dark Mamel monster family that first appeared in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 4 - The Eye of God and the Devil's Navel in 2010, and two cameo appearances in the Danganronpa series since 2017, under the name Monokumamel. Numerous other Mamels have appeared as well, such as the Silver Mamel Family(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. and the Borg Mamel.

Biography

Characteristics

Mamels will attack the player if they are close enough to hop toward them. Gitan Mamels have more chances to hit the player due to their faster movement and attacks, as well as K.O. the player earlier thanks to their high amount of attack and defense points. While Mamels behave like any monsters in the series, on rare occasions they will appear as friendly, non-playable characters. For example, three Antipode Mamels appear in The Other Side of the World, where in this place, monsters and people live side by side peacefully.

Physical Appearance

These monsters have a smooth spherical body, and a white widening tail, belly, and cat ears. With a slightly agape mouth showing a pink or blue tongue and wide eyes, the color of the monster's back depends on its level; going from blue in its weakest to yellow in its strongest form. The Mamel is likely the first, and the weakest monster players run into on their Shiren adventures, akin to other weak, common monsters such as the Slime in the Dragon Quest series. Their behavior are also similar to a cat, whether it is friendly or a foe, as they mimic and act like one throughout the series.

A ~Scent of Mamel~(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. (Japanese: ~マムルの匂い~) recipe can be found in the Hilarious Pot - Shiren the Wanderer Four Panel Manga Collection(UT) - This is an unofficial translation., with Koichi Nakamura's reaction in 4-panel manga format on the back cover.

Trivia

  • The Gitan Mamel was revealed prior to being released in Shiren 1 DS, as part of the Shiren the Wanderer Mini Collection 1. Though it was passed off as a SEGA Direct exclusive recolor figure.[1][2]
  • Subterranean Mamul, the name used for the Pit Mamel in the unofficial English Translation of Shiren 1 on the Super Famicom, was somewhat legitimized by the English release of AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative.
    • The unofficial English translation patch pre-dates the official release on the Nintendo DS by two years.
