Combat Strategy

Cave Mamel (6 HP) and Gitan Mamel (12 HP) only take 1 damage from normal attacks and most projectiles. Rocks always kill them in one hit. Their defense is nullified if they are sealed. Other ways to deal more than 1 damage to them include Electric Staff, Knockback Staff, Boring Staff, counter damage from Counter Shield / Retribution Rune, and overflow damage from Dispersing rune.

Gitan Mamel moves at double speed and can attack twice a turn. They always drop 2,000 Gitan when defeated.

If you find an early Glorious Staff, Glorious Talisman, or have some other way of leveling up monsters, you can level up a Mamel or Pit Mamel to a Gitan Mamel and kill it for an early boost in experience points and Gitan. A Gitan Mamel provides 5,500 exp, enough for Shiren to reach at least level 19. You can level up monsters by inflicting Fear, Berserk, Blind, or Confuse Status Conditions on them, or by inflicting Clone status on other monsters.
