Monster Houses (Japanese: モンスターハウス) are a recurring theme in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. They made their debut in Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995.
In gameplay, Monster Houses are full of Monsters, Items, and Traps. While in other media, they're usually depicted simply as a large number of monsters. There are 3 primary ways to encounter a monster house during gameplay.
- Walking into a pre-spawned monster house, or being thrown into one by a monster.
- Pop-up Monster Houses are activated when the player character steps on a specific Tile or walks several steps into a Room.
- Reading a Monster Scroll will generate a monster house.
- Reading one inside of a shop with unpaid items will generate a Shop monster house, with hostile Shopkeepers and, in some games, Sheriffs and Guard Dogs.
Themed monster houses are monster houses where every monster in them belongs to a specific Monster-type. For example, a "Drain House" will be full of Drain-type monsters, or a Ghost House will be full of Ghost-type monsters.
