Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki:Manual of Style (Unofficial Names)

Various Unofficial Names are used across the MDFW. It's a large amount of work to replace them, and we're generally not interested in debating the merits of one unofficial name over another. Some of the oldest names used across the wiki are those used for Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer DS2 - Magic Castle of the Desert, which were translated by former-admin Gabikun in 2008. As these names have been established for so long, it's better to leave them as-is, regardless of their perceived quality, or lack thereof.

When replacing unofficial names with official names, it's important to think before you act. While we can use Search and Replace, it needs to be done in an intelligent order, or it'll create issues.

Many instances of the (UT) - This is an unofficial translation. template will be used across the wiki. These will need to be corrected first, as replacing "Piko Hammer" with Pikotan casually will result in {{Shiren2|Pikotan}}{{UT}}. Other instances include things such as bold names, so Piko Hammer(UT) - This is an unofficial translation., or "Piko Hammer Family(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. It's important to get these outliers out of the way, as they will create issues down the line. Only once the outliers are out of the way, should the name then be changed casually in pages, file names, and so on.

The second issue to consider when replacing unofficial names with official names is the alphabetization issues. Navboxes, list of monster pages, list of item pages, (Number) Batch of Monster Families, and so on will all need to be re-ordered. This is another factor in why we don't entertain replacing one unofficial name with another. It's a large amount of work for something that's still unofficial and is largely a huge waste of time that contributes nothing of value to the wiki.
