This Dark Owl Family page is about the Nintendo DS release. For the Super Famicom release, see Shiren 1 SFC:Dark Owl Family.
For the lore page, see Shiren:Dark Owl Family.

The Dark Owl monster family (Japanese: やみふくろう系, Yami Fukurō Kei) in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Dark Owl (Japanese: やみふくろう, Yami Fukurō)
  2. Ghost Owl (Japanese: ようまふくろう, Yōma Fukurō)
  3. Dusk Owl (Japanese: あんこくふくろう, Anko Fukurō)
  4. Chaos Owl (Japanese: こんとんふくろう, Konton Fukurō)

They appear as plump brown birds standing on two-toed feet, with small beaks, wide eyes, small feathered tails, white tufts around their neck and on their head and have colored wings that span their whole backside and sides depending on their level:

  • 1 - olive green
  • 2 - blue
  • 3 - orange
  • 4 - purple

Like many other monster families, level 4 monsters in the Dark Owl family differ slightly compared to levels 1 - 3. Chaos Owls have an orange complexion instead of light brown, and the tufts atop its head and around its neck are also tinted purple instead of the normal grey.

When attacking, these monsters jump into the air without flapping their wings and deliver a kick to the target with both feet.

Monster Behaviour

Dark Owls do not wander the floor like other monsters, instead, they stay in one spot, even when Shiren is in sight. Dark Owls will only attack Shiren when within a 1 square range, and will not move from this spot even when Confused or under the Kigny status.

Monster Ability

The room where a Dark Owl Family Monster spawns will be shrouded in darkness so that the player can only see within a 1 square radius of Shiren. This effect is normally seen in hallways.

Technically, this is not an ability that can be used at will at its target, but a persistent effect of this monster.

Effect when Sealed

Rooms will no longer be darkened when inhabited. The monster will still stay in the same spot.

Combat Strategy

Dark Owl monsters do not move or actively seek out Shiren, but remain in rooms, creating a darkness effect that is normally seen in hallways. When in a room inhabited by a Dark Owl, Shiren will only be able to see within a 1 square radius of themselves. They will attack Shiren when adjacent to them, but will not chase the player if Shiren moves out of this range. While not such a threat themselves physically, even at higher levels, the darkness they cause can conceal Monsters unbeknownst to the player.

Monsters shrouded in darkness also can only see Shiren when standing within a 2 square radius of them, but once the room is brightened by defeating or sealing the Dark Owl(s), all monsters contained in the room will notice Shiren.

Meat Strategy

When transforming into a Dark Owl Family Monster, Shiren will gain 3 bonus effects.

  • The player will gain vision of the entire floor as if they had read a Scroll of Light, enabling them to see all Characters, monsters, Items and the stairs. This effect persists even after reverting back to Shiren, but not after transforming into another monster.
  • As Dark Owl, Monster-Shiren will in-explicitly gain the effect of the 'Silent Movement' status, meaning originally Asleep monsters (not including those in Monster Houses or put to sleep using Items or Traps) will not be woken up when Shiren is near them.
  • Shiren will be able to see Invisible entities such as Air Devil.pngAir Devil Family

These effects are beneficial in helping Shiren navigate a safe path through the floor.

Trivia

  • With an Armband of Sight equipped, Dark Owl Family Monsters are visible even in a darkened room.
  • Using a Switching Staff to transport a Dark Owl Monster into a hallway, then using a Pickaxe to expand a room into that hallway so the monster is contained in the room once more, will not darken the room. However, reading a Great Hall Scroll to expand the room will darken the entire great hall.
  • Traps cannot be created in a darkened room by Shiren as a Mecharoid Family Monster. Though traps can be placed down from the inventory with a Trap Armband equipped.
  • Despite gaining the ability to see invisible enemies such as Air Devil Family Monsters when transformed into a Dark Owl Family Monster, Dark Owls themselves cannot see Shiren when transformed into an Air Devil.
