The Schubell (Japanese: シューベル, Shūberu Kei) Monster Family in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

Schubell Family Monsters are small, marshmallow-shaped creatures with stubby arms and legs that carry around a large bell in their right hand. As their names suggest, they are based on 18 - 19-century composers: Schubell-Franz Schubert, Menbell-Felix Mendelssohn, Bellthoven-Ludwig van Beethoven, and Showpin-Frédéric Chopin, though their names have been modified to contain 'bell' to connect with this monster's ability and appearance. Customary to this theme of composers, Schubell Family Monsters have neat middle-parted hair which was popular at that time and instead of a mouth, these monsters have a bow tie. The tips of the monster's feet are also colored as if wearing shoes.

The color of the monster's hair, shoes, and bow tie depends on its level. The monster's flesh is white for all levels.

  • 1 - grey
  • 2 - violet
  • 3 - light green
  • 4 - orange

When using its ability, a Schubell will ring its bell, as slight desperation sweat drops appear above its head. This action also makes a bell sound. When attacking, it jumps into the air, and holding its bell with both hands brings it down on its target.

Monster Ability

  • Levels 1 - 2: Can summon 1 random monster out of nowhere into an empty square in front of itself. The summoned monster can only be the same level as the Schubell Family Monster. Some types of monsters cannot be summoned.
  • Levels 3 - 4: Can summon 1 - 3 out of nowhere into empty squares in front of itself. The summoned monsters can only be the same level as the Schubell Family Monster. Some types of monsters cannot be summoned.

If there are no empty squares in front of the Schubell, they will turn to the nearest empty space where a monster will be summoned. If there are not enough spaces for monsters to summon, only enough to fill the vacant squares, or none will appear.

Effect When Sealed

Schubell Family Monsters can no longer summon random monsters.

Combat Strategy

Schubell Family Monsters are decently strong monsters, though it is their high defense and ability that makes them dangerous.

In a group of monsters, they should be defeated first. If the Schubell is able to use its ability, potentially stronger monsters will appear that the player will need to defeat, and at levels 3 and 4, 1 - 3 even more dangerous monsters will spawn, therefore preventing this is essential. There are many ways to disable a Schubell monsters ability.

Schubell Family Monster Meat is not recommended to be thrown to transform other monsters, as their ability can quickly overwhelm Shiren, especially when at levels 3 - 4.

Item Strategies

  • Throwing Monster Meat to transform it into another monster. In a situation, 1 Ark Dragon is easier to handle than potentially 3. However, thrown items can miss.
  • Paralyze the monster using a Staff of Paralysis or a Staff of Postpone bolt or by throwing the Staff.
  • Use a Doppelganger Staff to temporarily disable the monsters's ability, as well as making it a target for other monsters to attack, as they are very weak, this will only distract other monsters for 3 turns at most and will cause the monster that kills it to level up.
  • Schubell monsters will only use their ability when they are as close to Shiren as possible, even behind obstructing monsters. Displacing the monster so that it will use its turns to move closer can prevent it using its ability. This can be done with a common Knockback Staff by a maximum of 10 squares or while transformed as a Dremlas Family Monster.
  • Sealed the monster with a Sealing Staff, or the magic ability of a Skull Wraith with a sealing effect. Though both of these scenarios are not likely possible.

Trap Strategies

Become a Trap Master by equipping a non-cursed Trap Armband, or become a Mecharoid Family Monster by consuming Monster Meat to use Traps against monsters.

Meat Strategy

Summoning additional monsters would not be beneficial for combat, as these monsters are still hostile and will attack Shiren. However, the ability of summoning random monsters can be exploited, if done so in a safe and controlled environment, such as a town.

Caution
  • As a monster, Weapon and Shield Runes on equipped items do not apply, and only the power of the weapon and shield is present. The effect of equipped Armbands also does not apply.
  • After defeating Evil Soldier Family, a Dead Soldier Family will spawn, and level up the next monster that is summoned. This monster cannot be defeated quickly as a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Rune Ghost.png seal will not apply as a monster.

Exploiting Schubell Meat

These methods are recommended for Schubell and Menbell Meat only, as Bellthovens and Showpins may summon multiple powerful monsters which can quickly overwhelm the player.

  • Schubell Family Monster Meat can be used to quickly gain Experience by summoning and instantly defeating monsters. This is recommended to be done with a highly upgraded weapon equipped. If Monster-Shiren cannot defeat the summoned monster in the turn they appear, they will be able to attack in the next turn. (Shiren is susceptible to Thief-type Monsters as the Shiren 1 DS - Shield Rune Thief.png seal on their Shield does not apply as a monster).
  • It may be a monster with a useful ability that is being recycled for, in which Shiren will need to 'revert' once they appear and collect their Monster Meat with a Bufu's Staff charge, or defeat them with a weapon with a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Rune Meat.png to have a chance to carve meat from them.
