This Baby Tengu Family page is about the Nintendo DS release. For the Super Famicom release, see Shiren 1 SFC:Baby Tengu Family.

The Baby Tengu (Japanese: 小僧天狗) Monster Family in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Baby Tengu (Japanese: 小僧天狗)
  2. Young Tengu (Japanese: カラス天狗)
  3. Tengu Chief (Japanese: 天狗師匠)
  4. Tengu Elder (Japanese: 天狗開祖)

Baby Tengu Family Monsters are small, stubby creatures covered in thick white hair. As the name suggests they bare a large resemblance to Tengu (Japanese: 天狗) yokai in Japanese folklore, wielding a hauchiwa (Japanese: 羽団扇) "feathered fan", and wearing a long-nosed mask and traditional wooden footwear, geta (Japanese: 下駄).

The color of the monster's mask, feathered fan, and footwear depends on its level:

  • 1 - Red, moss green, brown
  • 2 - Olive green, purple, and brown
  • 3 - Sky blue, black, and brown
  • 4 - Black, turquoise, magma orange

As with many other monster families, the level 4 monster's color scheme is different compared to levels 1 - 3. Instead of brown hands, face and footwear, they are red on a Tengu Elder.

When attacking, a Baby Tengu Family monster spins around, whipping its target with its long white hair.

Monster Ability

Baby Tengu Family Monsters don't appear naturally in their true form, because they spawn masqueraded as other monsters.

Only the appearance of Monsters that can spawn on that floor can be copied.

When masquerading, it is impossible to differentiate between a Baby Tengu and a real monsters appearance, however, the monster maintains it's own attack, defense and HP, and cannot use any abilities of that monster. There are some monster families that Baby Tengus cannot masquerade as.

Baby Tengus Cannot Masquerade as:

Effect when Sealed

Sealing a transformed Baby Tengu Monster will change them back into their original form.

Combat Strategy

Baby Tengu monsters are very weak and easily defeated, because physical power is not their strong point. However, because they are able to masquerade as other monsters, they can cost the player unnecessary items for taking precautions against, in their eyes, a formidable monster.

Identifying a Baby Tengu

  • Most of the time, they are transformed as physically strong, melee attacking monsters, namely the types that appear in Monster Houses.
  • Baby Tengu Family Monsters cannot be disguised as Air Devil Family monsters, but can be disguised as other Floating-type monsters such as Dragon Family Monsters.
  • If a monster that normally would use an ability, e.g. Thief-type Monsters, attacks Shiren normally, and has not been previously Sealed you can be very certain it is a Baby Tengu.
  • They cannot masquerade as monsters that are constantly using their ability, meaning Dark Owl monsters or others that naturally move at a different Speed than normal speed.
  • If a monster melee attacks Shiren but deals significantly lower damage than their normal attack range, and have not had their Strength drained, there's a high chance they are a Baby Tengu, though the normal attack of the monster they are mimicking should be checked to be certain.
  • Additionally, the monster's defense will be that of the Baby Tengu Monster. The amount of damage can be roughly calculated by subtracting the supposedly present monster's defense from Shiren's Weapon power and comparing this to the damage dealt to them. Some variation will be apparent, though large discrepancies can suggest a Baby Tengu Monster.
  • Successfully swing or throw a Sealing Staff at the monster. These staves, however, only appear in Final Puzzle and are unlikely to be available. If they are Baby Tengu, this will reveal them and prevent them from transforming again. (Though it may not be a good idea to use a Staves charge on every monster present, as Sealing Staves should be saved to neutralize powerful enemy abilities such as the fire-breathing of Dragons.)
  • A peculiar message appears when a fake monster's level increases, by a Staff of Happiness or a Dead Soldier Family. Only the Baby Tengu levels up but the masqueraded monster does not change form and so the message reads '[Monster1] leveled up and became [Monster1]'

Identification using Traps

Become a Trap Master by equipping a non-cursed Trap Armband, or become a Mecharoid Family Monster by consuming Monster Meat.

  • Have the suspected monster walk over or be hit with a Unequip Trap or a Curse Trap. This will seal the monster, and reveal its true form if masquerading. Additionally, if it is a real monster, their potentially dangerous abilities are now neutralized.
  • Have the monster walk over or be hit with a Riceball Trap. Under the 'Riceball' status and abilities of the monster will be temporarily disabled, and once the effect wears off, if the monster is fake, it will masquerade as another random monster. Repeating this technique and seeing the monster transform multiple times confirms it is a Baby Tengu.

Meat Strategy

Because Baby Tengu Family Monsters are naturally very weak, even at level 4, and have no special abilities besides disguise, their Monster Meat can be thrown to transform and nullify a powerful enemy. However, thrown items can miss and therefore this method should not be completely relied on at close distances. Do not be alarmed when the thrown meat hits and the target suddenly transforms.

Shiren gains no special abilities while transformed as a Baby Tengu Family Monster. However, there are benefits to consuming Monster Meat in general:

Monster Meat Description

  1. Baby Tengu meat: Eat this to change into a Baby Tengu.
  2. Young Tengu meat: Eat this to change into a Young Tengu.
  3. Tengu Chief meat: Eat this to change into a Tengu Chief.
  4. Tengu Elder meat: Eat this to change into a Tengu Elder.

Trivia

  • When a Baby Tengu is affected by the 'Riceball' status, it will emerge as a different monster every time the effect wears off.
  • When Baby Tengu Family Meat is thrown to transform a monster, the Baby Tengu will immediately transform into one of the possible monsters that can spawn on that floor.
  • Baby Tengus can only transform into monsters that spawn naturally on the current floor, which are conveniently monsters of the same level. However, if a Tengu Elder (level 4), is brought to a location where only level 2 monsters can spawn naturally, it will masquerade as a level 2 monster. Likewise, a Baby Tengu in an area of only level 4 monsters will be forced to masquerade as one.
  • When leveling up, a Baby Tengu will also immediately transform into a monster from that floor.
