Items (Japanese: 道具) in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team are used by the hero, their Partner, other Team Members, or enemy Pokémon while in dungeons. Most items fall under the category of wearable, consumable (edible), or consumable (inedible).
Dungeons
Items found in dungeons are obtained by one of several different methods: They can be looted, dug out of walls, purchased, sold, stolen, or dropped by enemy Pokémon.
On a floor, outside of the inventory and held items, there can be up to 64 items at once. When that limit is reached, items can no longer be placed on the ground until one is picked up, and thrown items get destroyed instead of landing on the ground. Thrown items also get destroyed if there is no room for them to land due to the surrounding tiles already being covered with other items, Traps, or Special Tiles, which are already occupying 2-tiles radius where the item would land.[1]
Buried Items
Items can be found buried inside of walls in certain dungeons. While dashing along the walls, the player Pokémon may occasionally stop. In this case, it can be determined that an item is hidden in the wall. Players can use the move Rock Smash or the IQ skill Super Mobile to break the wall and discover the hidden item.
Kecleon Shops
For the full article on Kecleon Shops in dungeons, see: Kecleon Shops (dungeons).
Not to be confused with looting, items found on Kecleon Titles in a dungeon are considered the property of the Kecleon guarding the mat. Here they can be purchased, sold, stolen or traded. Items placed on the mat can be sold to the Kecleon if there's sufficient space or if an item on the mat is traded. If you place an item, sell it and then attempt to purchase an item you just picked up, it's important you have enough Poké to be able to purchase it, lest you be accused of stealing. It's inadvisable to walk off the mat during a trade, as it may lead to being branded a thief if you lack the currency to pay for the item or items.
Stealing while on a rescue floor is inadvisable as it will prevent the player from successfully completing the rescue. If the player faints, they'll fail the rescue and be unable to redo it. Rescues should be completed before attempting to steal.
Looting
Items found on the floor in dungeons can be picked up off the ground. They'll be added to the player's inventory unless it's full, in which case the Hero or team member will step on them. From there, they can be replaced with an item in the player's inventory. Prior to obtaining the toolbox, the player will only be able to carry one item. After obtaining the toolbox, they'll be able to carry 20 items, along with each active member of the party being able to equip one.
Occasionally enemy Pokémon may drop an item. Either one they've picked up off the dungeon floor or randomly. From there, they will be considered free for the taking.
Items do not spawn inside of Makuhita Dojo training dungeons.
Special
One unique way to obtain items is to use an Itemizer Orb on an enemy Pokémon. They'll be converted into an item.
Pokémon Square
Items found in Pokémon Square are obtained by one of several different methods: Mission rewards, quests, gifts, or they can be purchased from Kecleon Shop (town).
Gifts
On rare occasions, items are gifted to the player. The first instance is after the player unlocks the Toolbox. They're given several items as a reward for successfully rescuing Caterpie from Tiny Woods. Another method of obtaining gift items is after successfully clearing Makuhita Dojo training dungeons. Makuhita will give the player a Ginseng on several occasions.
Kecleon Shop

Items can be purchased from the Kecleon Bros. in Pokémon Square. The left brother sells most general items, such as projectiles, food, Seeds, etc. The right brother, the purple one sells Wonder Orbs and TMs. The items they sell will change depending on the player's story progression with rarer, more powerful items being sold post-credits.
Mission Rewards
Along with Rescue Points, missions reward players with items. Items rewarded from missions will be added to the player's inventory unless it's full, in which case they'll be automatically sent to Kangaskhan Storage.
Quests
Some objects seen in the story or obtained as part of quests may be called items, although they don't function as items from a technical perspective. They can't be used or interacted with normally and usually only make appearances during quests. These include the 9-Tail Crest, Teleport Gem, Rainbow Wing, and Rescue Team Badge. Other quest items, such as the Wish Stone, have a gameplay use outside of the intended quest and can be sold, found in a dungeon, and have the ability to be added to the player's inventory or storage.
Using Items
The player and enemy Pokémon can use items in dungeons. A decent number of items found in dungeons are of a one-time use, designed to provide benefits to the player. Since they can also be used by enemies, they can be a setback as well, as the effect for the enemy is now placed onto the player.
Some, such as Wonder Orbs, can petrify all enemies in a room or floor, making them generally useful for tight situations. Others, such as the Music Box, are linked to specific tasks such as obtaining Mew within the Buried Relic.
Equipping Items
A selection of items can be equipped to your party to gain passive buffs. For example, the Friend Bow increases the chances of recruiting Pokémon found in dungeons, provided that they are not unrecruitable and the dungeon allows it.
Item Destruction
The player and enemy Pokémon can destroy items in dungeons. Items that are destroyed are permanently removed from the dungeon or the Toolbox in various methods, the most common being Magma, followed by Traps. While they can be replaced, items being destroyed right before the player may need them is something to be aware of.
Sticky Items
Sticky is a condition that items can be afflicted with by Sticky Traps, or being naturally found that way when encountered.
Sticky items are rendered unusable by any Pokémon. However, they can be removed from this condition by a few methods such as a Cleanse Orb or exiting the dungeon with it in the Toolbox.
