Returning Characters in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Mystery Dungeon in general is a common occurrence. However, as characters share the same names as regular Pokémon, it can be difficult to know for sure if they're meant to be the same person. This page covers the evidence and potential hints that certain characters returned from previous games.

Pokémon Square

Persian and Whiscash
Confirmed Icon.png

Persian and Whiscash are known to have left Pokémon Square, though neither gives a reason why. With so many Pokémon that have identical species and speaking mannerisms returning in Explorers, and some being verified as the same Pokémon, it can be inferred that they weren't the only ones who left the region.

Kecleon Brothers

The Kecleon Brothers made up of Kecleon (Big Brother) and Kecleon (Little Brother) are a pair of merchant Kecleon who appear in Rescue Team, Rescue Team DX, the Explorers titles, and some related media. They sell the same item types in each piece of media, and have nearly the same dialogue in-game they're the only known instance of a non-green Kecleon in the entire Pokémon world

Gardevoir and Medicham
Confirmed Icon.png

Gardevoir and Medicham both know Guildmaster Wigglytuff. With the evidence of Diglett and Dugtrio being connected to Skarmory in the Super MD Connection Orb and other Pokémon Square characters who are known to have moved, it can be inferred that both Wigglytuff and 2/3 of the members of Team Charm are recurring characters.

Spinda

Spinda is a traveler and a Pokémon Square visitor. He reappears in Super MD and a special video. It's unknown if the Spinda in Spinda's Café is the same.

Wobbuffet and Wynaut

Wobbufett and Wynaut were Pokémon Square visitors. Wynaut reappear in Explorers, however, she is female, but has the exact same speech mannerisms, almost exclusively saying the species name (or an equivalent translation), like in Rescue Team. While in Super MD, the female Wobbufett speaks using normal sentences.

Treasure Town

Various Pokémon from Treasure Town and the surrounding areas match the ones from Pokémon Square and the surrounding areas. Not only in terms of being the same species, but also in who they associate with.

Xatu

Another returning Pokémon species that has similar speech mannerisms is Xatu. Xatu makes the same sound while opening Treasure Boxes as the one in Rescue Team, right before he's about to speak.

Kangaskhan
Confirmed Icon.png

Kangaskhan appears in Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad, with the same role and behavior. However, this does not confirm that the three are the same, as Super reveals that there is a family of Kangaskhan running the same business all over the world. The Kangaskhan in the special video The Jellicent Show mentions Duskull, meaning she is the Kangaskhan from Treasure Town.

Wigglytuff's Guild

Diglett and Dugtrio
Confirmed Icon.png

Diglett and Dugtrio are a son/father duo in Rescue Team and Explorers. While Explorers doesn't confirm them as being the same, they also appear Super, where Diglett is connected to Dugtrio, Skarmory (who interacted with Diglett in Rescue Team), and Chimecho (who was their co-worker at Wigglytuff's Guild).

Wigglytuff

Wigglytuff who sells Friend Areas/Rescue Team Friend Camps in Pokémon Square is likely the same as Guildmaster Wigglytuff. He constantly says the phrase "Let's be friends!", which is similar to Guildmaster Wigglytuff's dialogue. Several other Pokémon from Pokémon Square appear in later games.

Post Town and Paradise

Dunsparce

A Dunsparce made a small appearance in Explorers of Sky, where he goes after "pretty ladies". Dunsparce later appears as a major character in Gates to Infinity, where his story starts with him having a crush on Virizion.

Mienfoo

A Mienfoo is in Post Town in Gates to Infinity. A Mienfoo character is also in Lively Town in Super.

Hydreigon
Confirmed Icon.png

Hydreigon, introduced in Gates to Infinity, reappears in Super and makes a direct reference to the epilogue of Gates to Infinity.

Umbreon and Espeon
Confirmed Icon.png

Umbreon and Espeon from Gates to Infinity reappear in Super. The special video Pokémon Friendship directly references the events of Gates to Infinity.

Ducklett

In Gates to Infinity Ducklett is a traveler who loves to eat at Swanna House. Ducklett's dialogue in Super says he travels the world, and that he likes food. In the Connecton Orb he is only connected to Purrloin, who wasn't a character prior to Super.

Serene Village

Farfetch'd

A Farfetch'd character is in Adventure Squad. A Farfetch'd character appears as a teacher in Serene Village in Super.

Miscellaneous

Ampharos and Mawile

Ampharos and Mawile are two Pokémon who appear on the expedition to Sky Peak. They later seem to re-appear as Expedition Society members, alongside Jirachi in Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.

Jirachi
Confirmed Icon.png

Jirachi of the Expedition Society mentions having been born in Star Cave, which is the location of the Bidoof's Wish Special Episode in Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, where Bidoof, a member of Wigglytuff's Guild, makes a wish for new recruits.

Expedition Society

The Expedition Society itself also appears to have been mentioned for the first time by Grovyle in the fifth special episode in Explorers of Sky, however the name had different translations in English.

Munna

Munna, introduced in Gates to Infinity, reappears in Super and makes a direct reference to her story in the former game.

Skuntank
Confirmed Icon.png

Skuntank, introduced in Explorers, reappears in Super and refers to himself as the leader of Team Skull.

Shiny Celebi
Confirmed Icon.png

Shiny Celebi was introduced in Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky. She reappears in Super alongside Grovyle. She also reappars as a recruitable Pokémon in Rescue Team DX and has dialogue when spoken to inside a dungeon. While the dialogue itself isn't anything special, she says "tee-hee", just like in Super.
