Pkmn:Memory Loss
Memory Loss affects many characters in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. It may happen because of a variety of reasons.
Humans Turned Pokémon
Many, but not all, humans lose their memories when turned into Pokémon. This does not seem to be inherently related to the transformation.
The Rescue Team Hero loses his/her memories at the beginning of the game. Never regained.
The Explorers Hero loses his/her memories at the beginning of the game, when Darkrai attacks the dimensional hole. Never regained, although he/she learns about his/her past.
Piplup doesn't remember anything from when he was a human.
Piplup: "Even after all this time, and all the things we've done, I don't remember anything about when I was a human in the future." (Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time and Darkness)
Piplup: "But... I can't remember. Sorry." (Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time and Darkness)

Fire
loses his memories at the beginning of the Blazing Exploration Team manga.
Fire: "I can't remember anything from when I was a human." (Blazing Exploration Team, chapter 1, page 11)
The Super MD Hero accepts to have his memories erased at the beginning of the game. This happens again shortly after, when Beheeyem attacks. Never regained, although he learns about his past.
Beheeyem: "Fine then... I'll tell you just one thing... (hero). It was because of who you are and what you might remember."
Beheeyem: "You still had some memories of who you were when you first came to this world... But then... No... No. I'm sorry. I can't say anymore. Please don't make me..."
Nuzleaf: "The only reason (hero) here ain't had no memory all this time... is because that Beheeyem right there went and erased it all."
Nuzleaf: "You still knew who you were when you first came along to this here world. Before you lost your memories, you even tried battling me and my pals here. While we were all fighting, though... you got hit with a dose of ol' Beheeyem's psychic power... and plumb forgot who you were."
Partner: "(hero), it wasn't the Beheeyem that made you lose all of your memories. It was me. I... or Mew...erased your memories. It was what you agreed to... before you came to this world."
Other Characters
Deoxys debuts in Rescue Team after Rayquaza destroys his meteor. When he makes his first appearance, he has lost his memories.
Deoxys: Where... Where am I? There was a sudden explosion... And I awakend to this... What is this place? I am Deoxys. I came from space. If you know, tell me. I must know...what happened here!
Darkrai loses his memories at the end of the story when Palkia destroys the dimensional hole while he tries to escape through it.
Cresselia: "The dimensional hole completely shattered! With Darkrai still inside of it!"
Partner: "I heard Darkrai scream... Did Darkrai disappear forever?
Palkia: "NO. THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED. HE HAS SUFFERED GRIEVOUS DAMAGE...AND BEEN BANISHED TO SOME UNKNOWN PLACE... BUT, WHEREVER HE MAY BE...HE LIVES.
Partner: "When he recovers from injury... Won't Darkrai go back to his wicked ways?"
Cresselia: "That remains to be seen. Because when Darkrai entered the dimensional hole... he began to time travel... At that precise moment, he was struck with Palkia's attack. Remember what Darkrai said about (hero)'s arrival from the future? Darkrai attacked during time travel... So (hero) got hit with amnesia. So just like (hero)... It's likely that Darkrai has lost his memory as well."
Partner: "Darkrai has lost his memory?!"
Cresselia: "Yes. Darkrai will likely never recover his memory... And he will wander lost through the world.
Partner: "Darkrai..."
Palkia: "WE ARE DONE WITH HIM. HE WILL NOT LIKELY EXPAND THE DISTORTION OF SPACE AGAIN."
The Super MD Partner erases his/her own memories before the start of the game, and regains them at the end of the main story by touching Xerneas' horns.
Partner: "But when I touched Xerneas's horns...I understood. I remembered."
Unaffected Characters
Hydreigon claimed everyone was supposed to forget the Gates to Infinity Hero as soon as he was enveloped in the light at the end of the main story, but after he left, they still remembered him. The characters assume that Pokémon who have not had significant interactions with the Hero and didn't make an effort to remember him were affected by the memory loss, but this is unconfirmed, and it's unknown if the Hero being able to come back to the Pokémon World restored everyone's memories.
Hydreigon: "Once you are swallowed up in that light, (hero)... All of your time here in the Pokémon world...and all that you did... ...will disappear from the memories of the Pokémon remaining here."
Hydreigon: "I am the Voice of Life... ...and so I will not forget you, (hero). But... everyone else... Sob..."
Partner: "Hydreigon still seems shocked,to be honest. When (hero) returned to the humanworld, we were all supposed to have lost... ...all memories that (hero) was once here with us. Apparently it's some sort of law--a fundamental truth of nature. But... ...we all went right onremembering (hero)."
Hydreigon: "No, it really is unbelievable, you know! Your feelings for (hero) somehow allowed you all to retain your memories... ...even in defiance of the laws of nature! And yet it doesn't seem to be creating any distortion or upsetting nature's balance! This is really... ...just unbelievably amazing!"
Unclear Status
Being based on the Rescue Team Hero, Squirtle presumably lost all of his memories, although this is not directly mentioned.
Being based on the Super MD Hero, Riolu (character - Super MD Manga) presumably lost all of his memories, although this is not directly mentioned.
Causes
Forget
- Uxie has the ability to erase the memories of others, to some extent.
- Beheeyem has the ability to erase the memories of others.
- The Super MD Partner appears to have the ability to erase the memories of others, and supposedly his/her own.
- Shattering a dimensional hole while someone is traveling through it may cause them to lose their memories.
- Hydreigon claims a human leaving the Pokémon world may be forgotten by the Pokémon who met him.
Remember
- Touching Xerneas' horns allowed the Super MD Partner to regain his/her memories.
