Gengar (Japanese: ゲンガー) is a Pokémon and a recurring character in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. He made his debut in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team in 2005.
He is a former human, and the former leader of the Rescue Team Team Meanies, after having presumably disbanded it or outright leaving.
Biography
The Curse of Ninetales
Gengar was once a human Pokémon Trainer who foolishly touched one of the tails of Ninetales. Hid Pokémon, Gardevoir bore the brunt of the curse, and when Ninetales offered to let him take her place, he had already fled. Gengar was reincarnated 1,000 years later as a Pokémon, for reasons related to the curse.[Citation needed]
Team Meanies
Little is known about how or when Gengar became a Pokémon, or what his human name was before he became a Pokémon.
In Team Meanies is Formed!, it is revealed that at some point after being reborn as a Pokémon, he tried to steal requests from Ekans while he was looking at bulletin board. Medicham, a friend of Ekans, came to save him. Avoiding picking a fight, Gengar ran away from the two of them.
They did not meet again until a few days later, when Gengar planned on stealing from the Kecleon Shop, as they had also planned on stealing from them. Realizing they had found Gengar again, they chased him down. But, before they could fight, they are found by Wynaut and Wobbuffet who misidentify them as a Rescue Team and asked them to fulfill their request. Not wanting to making themselves look suspicious after attempting to steal from the Kecleon Shop, they decided to pretend to be a Rescue Team. After fulfilling the request for Wynaut, they realized they worked well together as a team, and decided to officially form Team Meanies.
Gengar initially feels hesitant joining the team, wondering if it would be fine for him to join them after "throwing away" Gardevoir. However, he decided to continue working alongside them.
Rescue Team Titles
Throughout the events of the Rescue Team Titles, Gengar and his team are always out to serve themselves, or harm others, sometimes both. While Gengar helps to create the Teleport Gem, he also tries to drag the Hero into the Dream World, but claims to gets lost and gives up. He later seeks out their help to break the curse over Gardevoir and set her free. He tags along with the Hero to the peak of Mt. Freeze, where he requests Ninetales to break the curse. Ninetales says it's beyond their power, gives Gengar the Nine Tail Crest, and directs him to Murky Cave.
Gengar has to allow the Hero to speak for him, while he's paralyzed. However, the voice of Murky Cave denies their request, until Gengar breaks free and proves that he does, on some level, have remorse for his actions. After this, his fellow members of Team Meanies comment that he hasn't been around much. Medicham went on to join Team Charm, while it's unknown what happened to Ekans.
It's never explained who, or what, the voice in Murky Cave is, much like Luminous Cave. It's possible that the voices of both locations are the Voice of Life.
Go-Getters Out of the Gate
In the anime Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate, Team Meanies try to show up Team Go-Getters and save Pikachu from Skarmory. They were unable to do so, and Team Go-Getters was able to finish the mission.
Ginji's Rescue Team
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team, Gengar has generic villain motivations of wanting to destroy the world. Despite this, he aids in defeating Groudon, by using Double-Edge against it. He's not seen after this point in the manga and is presumed dead.

Personality
Gengar is a vile, duplicitous, greedy, selfish Pokémon in every piece of media he's shown in. While a sliver of humanity shines through at the end of his character arc in the video games, he still fronts as a scumbag. It's possible that this is how he wants to be seen, or it could be a case of him not wanting people thinking he turned over a new leaf, simply because he did a single selfless act.

Trivia
- Gengar can use often use Moves he can't learn in the games.
- He uses Confusion in the Go-Getters Out of the Gate Anime.
- He uses Double-Edge in Ginji's Rescue Team.
- Double-Edge was a tutor-only move in the main series games at the time of release.
- When Gengar asks the player to escort him through Murky Cave, he knows Leer, Quick Attack, Scratch, and Taunt. Gengar aren't able to learn the first 3 moves. They're the first four level-up moves of Absol and Sneasel, and the data was likely just copy/pasted from Absol's, who appears as an ally earlier in the game.
- Rescue Team DX fixed Gengar's learnset, replacing it with; Shadow Ball, Hypnosis, Sucker Punch, and Dream Eater.
