The Schubell (Japanese: シューベル, Shūberu Kei) Monster Family in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:
Schubell Family Monsters are small, marshmallow-shaped creatures with stubby arms and legs that carry around a large bell in their right hand. As their names suggest, they are based on 18 - 19-century composers: Schubell-Franz Schubert, Menbell-Felix Mendelssohn, Bellthoven-Ludwig van Beethoven, and Showpin-Frédéric Chopin, though their names have been modified to contain 'bell' to connect with this monster's ability and appearance. Customary to this theme of composers, Schubell Family Monsters have neat middle-parted hair which was popular at that time and instead of a mouth, these monsters have a bow tie. The tips of the monster's feet are also colored as if wearing shoes.
The color of the monster's hair, shoes, and bow tie depends on its level. The monster's flesh is white for all levels.
When using its ability, a Schubell will ring its bell, as slight desperation sweat drops appear above its head. This action also makes a bell sound. When attacking, it jumps into the air, and holding its bell with both hands brings it down on its target.
If there are no empty squares in front of the Schubell, they will turn to the nearest empty space where a monster will be summoned. If there are not enough spaces for monsters to summon, only enough to fill the vacant squares, or none will appear.
Schubell Family Monsters can no longer summon random monsters.
Schubell Family Monsters are decently strong monsters, though it is their high defense and ability that makes them dangerous.
In a group of monsters, they should be defeated first. If the Schubell is able to use its ability, potentially stronger monsters will appear that the player will need to defeat, and at levels 3 and 4, 1 - 3 even more dangerous monsters will spawn, therefore preventing this is essential. There are many ways to disable a Schubell monsters ability.
Schubell Family Monster Meat is not recommended to be thrown to transform other monsters, as their ability can quickly overwhelm Shiren, especially when at levels 3 - 4.
Become a Trap Master by equipping a non-cursed Trap Armband, or become a Mecharoid Family Monster by consuming Monster Meat to use Traps against monsters.
Summoning additional monsters would not be beneficial for combat, as these monsters are still hostile and will attack Shiren. However, the ability of summoning random monsters can be exploited, if done so in a safe and controlled environment, such as a town.
These methods are recommended for Schubell and Menbell Meat only, as Bellthovens and Showpins may summon multiple powerful monsters which can quickly overwhelm the player.
