The Hen (Japanese: チキン) Monster Family in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Hen (Japanese: チキン)
  1. Master Hen (Japanese: マスターチキン)
  2. Great Hen (Japanese: グレートチキン)
  3. Miracle Hen (Japanese: ミラクルチキン)

At level one, Hens take the appearance of a tiny featherless bird with tinged brown flesh and a bare stubby tail. They have the head and white neckband of a green mallard duck, though with a shorter yellow beak and the comb of a chicken atop their head. There is always a comedic shocked expression on this monster's face, as it is constantly panting with characteristic sweat droplets flying from as it flees Shiren at Double Speed on tiny three-toed chicken feet. If Shiren defeats a Hen, being one of the weakest enemies in the game, he gains only one experience point.

Hens do not spawn naturally in dungeons, and even cannot be summoned by a Schubell Family. They can only appear, without using Meat, when a level 2 - 4 Monster of the same family, i.e. a Master Hen, Great Hen or Miracle Hen's HP becomes low enough without defeating it, where it will then transform into a Hen.

When a Hen attacks, which can only occur when Confused, Sealed, Blind or under the 'Kigny' status or if Shiren is transformed into a Hen, it jumps up into the air, and delivers a kick to the enemy.

At levels two to four, Hen Family Monsters take the appearance of large four-armed muscular anthropomorphic birds with short beaks and two horn-like fronds coming from the top of its head. They appear to a tank top that drapes down into a loincloth as well as brown sweatbands on all four wrists. What can be interpreted as a head ornament featuring an orange center sits on the forehead of these monsters. As well as large two-toed feet, Hen Family Monsters level 2 - 4 also have a three feathered tail of their same flesh color that almost reaches the floor. The color of the Monsters Feathers and clothing (details) depends on its level:

  • 2 - bright purple, olive green details
  • 3 - grey, sky blue details
  • 4 - orange, indigo details

When it attacks, it performs three punches, alternating pairs of arms on each side, with orange flames following each punch, characteristic of anime and manga.

Special Drops

Hens will drop Hen Monster Meat if they are hit by an explosion from Popster Tank Family, Spike Bomb Family, Big Landmine Trap, Landmine Trap, Venting Jar or Scroll of Explosion.

Monster Ability

  • Level 1: Hens are able to move at Double Speed.
  • Level 2 - 4: At 15 current HP, will transform into a Hen.
  • Level 3 - 4: Great Hens and Miracle Hens move and attack at double speed.

In one of Shiren's normal Speed turns, a level 3-4 Hen Family Monster has 3 options for its double-speed turn.

  • 2 movement turns - to move towards their target.
  • 1 movement turn and 1 attacking turn - to reach and begin attacking their target.
  • 2 attacking turns - if already next to their target.

Effect when Sealed

  • Level 1: Hens will now move at normal speed. They will still run away from Shiren, but will now attack when cornered.
  • Levels 2 - 4: Master Hens, Great Hens and Miracle Hens will no longer transform into a Hen when at ~33% of maximum hit points.
  • Levels 3 - 4: Great Hens and Miracle Hens will no longer move or attack at double speed.

Combat Strategy

  • Level 1: When any higher-level monster from this family is low on HP, it'll change into a Hen. Hens are harmless but will move at Double Speed away from Shiren. Because they give only 1 Experience point on defeat, there is little benefit to defeating them unless the player has a Weapon with a Fusion, as Hen Monster Meat can be useful in some cases. They can also be turned into Meat by explosions. See: Meat Strategy.

On floors with Kigny Family and Popster Tank Family monsters, Hens are an easy target for these monsters to level up, so it may be wise to defeat them to prevent this.

  • Level 2: Master Hens move at normal Speed and have average attack power. Treat them the same as any other level 2 monster.
  • Levels 3 - 4: Both Great Hens and Miracle Hens move at Double Speed and attack twice in a turn, so consider attacking them with Arrows, Staves, or Scrolls if they are far away, and when surrounded by enemies, they should be a priority to defeat first.

It's recommended to deal a high amount of damage at once to Hen Family Monsters levels 2 - 4, rather than multiple small attacks, as if the player is not able to defeat the monster, it will transform into a Hen which only gives 1 Experience Point on death, instead of the usual amount. This can sometimes be frustrating, as Items, time and HP were invested in fighting the monster, only for the experience reward to disappear. Sealing the monster with a Sealing Staff, or by a Unequip Trap or Curse Trap as a Trap Master will prevent this from occurring.

Alternatively, thrown Monster Meat can be used to transform any level of Hen family monster into another, more easily defeated form. However, thrown Items can miss and therefore should not be relied on.

Meat Strategy

  • Level 1: As a Hen, Shiren will be able to move at Double Speed, which can be useful for escaping a tough situation or quickly navigating towards the stairs. There are no other benefits to being a Hen. When consumed, Hen Meat will fill Shiren's Fullness by 100 points (the same amount as a Big Riceball.)
  • Level 2: As a Master Hen, Shiren will not gain any special abilities and will still move at normal speed.
  • Levels 3 - 4: As a Great Hen or Miracle Hen, Shiren will be able to move and attack at Double Speed.
Caution

While transformed as a Hen, Shiren will not retain the power of the currently equipped Weapon and Shield, therefore fighting in this state will only deal 1 damage to enemies, while Shiren will take the full attack power of enemy attacks.

Trivia

  • Hens are the only monsters that instantly become Meat in an explosion, becoming Hen Meat, the real life equivalent of which is roast chicken.
  • Hens are one of the types of monsters that a Baby Tengu Family cannot masquerade as. To create a Hen, the Master Hen, Great Hen or Miracle Hen needs to be genuine.
  • The Japanese names for Hen Family Monsters literally say 'chicken' chi-ki-n, though the names were localized as 'hen'.
