Shiren 1 DS:Twisty Hani Family
The Twisty Hani monster family (Japanese: くねくねハニー系, Kunekune hanī Kei) in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:
- Twisty Hani (Japanese: くねくねハニー, Kunekune hanī)
- Floppy Hani (Japanese: なよなよハニー, Nayonayo hanī)
- Droopy Hani (Japanese: くたくたハニー, Kutakuta hanī)
- Wrinkly Hani (Japanese: しわしわハニー, Shiwashiwa hanī)
Twisty Hani monsters are based on clay Japanese figures called Haniwa (Japanese: 埴輪). Though many Haniwa resemble soldiers and animals, there are some that are similar to this monster family, with round cylinder-like bodies circular black eyes and mouth, and arms curved upwards on one side, and downwards on the other. This design of Haniwa is popular in pop culture, as many Japanese games model characters and items on their highly customizable and friendly appearance.
The color of the monster's flesh and the light reflection on its left side and the tips of its appendages depend on its level:
- Olive, peach
- Sky blue, peach
- Magma orange, peach
- Grey, light orange
This set of main colours in levels 1 - 3 is common in other monster families, such as the Mamel Family and Field Bandit Family. It is common for the color scheme of the level 4 monster in the family to differ slightly, as it does here with a darker orange shine, though this difference is less pronounced than in other monster families.
Monster Ability
Approximately half of the time, Twisty Hani Family Monsters will 'dance mysteriously' which will decrease Shiren's current level by 1. It will take 1 Experience Point to reach the initial level.
Effect When Sealed
Twisty Hani can no longer dance mysteriously to decrease Shiren's level.
Combat Strategy
If a weapon with a Seal from a Razor Wind is available, lead the Twisty Hani into a bend in the floor, and use the weapons ability to cut corners, allowing the player to achieve the first hit on the monster without being within ability range.
If fighting at close range, equip an Antidrain Armband to prevent losing levels to Twisty Hani Monster abilities or a Happy Armband as to regain the levels immediately after they are taken away because the Twisty Hani drains you to the point that you have 1 experience point until the current level. Note that, when using a Happy Armband to make up for the Twisty Hani's ability, your progress to your next level will be lost/reset by the Twisty Hani, which still makes the Antidrain Armband optimal, though the Happy Armband can work if you do not have an Antidrain Armband. Otherwise, it can be beneficial, as with other Drain-Type monsters to avoid standing next to them and to use ranged attacks unless you are certain you can defeat them in one turn. Possible options for ranged attacks include:
- Arrows.
- Staff bolts or thrown staves, which may miss.
- Scrolls such as a Blastwave Scroll.
- Thrown Gitan which may also miss.
If desperate, a spare Drain Buster can even be thrown, though this can also miss and is not likely to defeat high-level Twisty Hani.
Alternatively, Twisty Hani Family Monsters are popular candidates to be transformed into less dangerous monsters by throwing Monster Meat. Defeating a Twisty Hani does not reward much Experience or drop any special Items and so transforming the would not cause a great loss. However, thrown items can miss, therefore this decision should be made far away from the monster and not while adjacent to them, as this would waste a turn.
Monster Type
Twisty Hani Family Monsters are Drain-Type, meaning they 200% damage from a weapon with a (drain) Seal from a Drain Buster. Drain-Type Monsters do not specialize in having high HP, so an attack from a decently strong weapon with a seal is likely to instantly defeat them, preventing them from using their status effecting abilities in the next turn.
Meat Strategy
As any leveled Twisty Hani Family Monster, Shiren can use an ability to decrease a monster's level by 1. As there is a significant jump in status levels and abilities between level 3 and 4 monsters, the effect of bringing a level 4 monster down to 3 can be significant and potentially life-saving.
After a monster's level decreases, their turn is consumed and Shiren gets to act again, on high-level floors with unsuitable equipment, leveling down monsters until they can be defeated in one attack becomes the only, though unsustainable way of tolerating strong monsters.
Twisty Hani Family Meat should not be used to transform other monsters as this would create an avoidable threat to Shiren's own levels.
