The Twisty Hani (Japanese: くねくねハニー) Monster Family is a recurring monster in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995, making it one of the Original Monster Families. Its most recent appearance was in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island in 2024.

The Twisty Hani Family consists of:

  1. Twisty Hani (Japanese: くねくねハニー, Kunekune hanī)
  2. Floppy Hani (Japanese: なよなよハニー, Nayonayo hanī)
  3. Droopy Hani (Japanese: くたくたハニー, Kutakuta hanī)
  4. Wrinkly Hani (Japanese: しわしわハニー, Shiwashiwa hanī)

The Twisty Hani Family has made two cameo appearances in the Danganronpa series, the first in 2017, under the name Twisty Monokuma.

Origin

Twisty Hani monsters are based on clay Japanese figures called Haniwa (Japanese: 埴輪(はにわ)). Though many Haniwa resemble soldiers and animals, there are some that are similar to this monster family, with round cylinder-like bodies circular black eyes and mouth, and arms curved upwards on one side, and downwards on the other. This design of Haniwa is popular in pop culture, as many Japanese games model characters and items on their highly customizable and friendly appearance.

In Despair Dungeon: Monokuma's Test (Japanese: 絶望のダンジョン モノクマの試練, Dungeon of Despair: Monokuma's Trial), a Twisty Monokuma appears as a common monster. It is a fusion between a Twisty Hani and Monokuma.[1]

In Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp (Japanese: ハッピーダンガンロンパＳ 超高校級の南国サイコロ合宿), Twisty Monokuma's appear in Despair Dungeon: Monokuma's Test, they are a fusion between a Twisty Hani and Monokuma.
