This Dead Soldier Family page is about the Nintendo DS release. For the Super Famicom release, see Shiren 1 SFC:Ghost Musha Family.
For the lore page, see Shiren:Dead Soldier Family.

The Dead Soldier monster family (Japanese: ぼうれい武者系, Bōrei Musha Kei) in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Dead Soldier (Japanese: ぼうれい武者, Bōrei Musha)
  2. Dead Veteran (Japanese: ぼうれいはんにゃ, Bōreihannya)
  3. Dead General (Japanese: 将軍ゾンビ, Shōgun Zonbi)
  4. Dead Shogun (Japanese: 大将軍ゾンビ, Daishōgun Zonbi)

Dead Soldiers take the form of their respectively leveled Evil Soldier Family counterpart, though bereft of the samurai's shoulder spaulders, sode (Japanese: 袖) and helmet, kabuto (Japanese: 冑), and only equipped with a plated cuirass, do (Japanese: 胴) which connects to thigh plates, haidate (Japanese: 佩楯), and plain rounded boots.

Without upper body armor, Dead Soldiers are lean, skeleton-like creatures bearing soulless black eyes and two pointed teeth which are notable in Evil Soldiers. An orange band sits around the forehead of the monster and they have long untamed hair and two sharp-clawed fingers. Because Dead Soldiers appear after the samurai-like Evil Soldier is defeated, and are missing their sword, it is as if they have been slain in battle, and have returned as vengeful spirits, wandering the floor in search of a monster that can avenge them, hence their ability.

The color of the monster's armor plates; footwear, hair, and armbands depend on its level:

  • 1 - green, red
  • 2 - purple, olive green
  • 3 - grey, sky blue
  • 4 - orange, purple

When attacking while Confused, Blind or Sealed, Dead soldiers move forward and furiously scratch the target with its double-clawed hands, creating two scratch marks with the left claw first, then the right.

When possessing another monster, Dead Soldiers jump up into the air, arms out, and dive into the other monster before disappearing, leveling them up.

Dead Soldiers do not spawn naturally in dungeons, and cannot be summoned by a Schubell Family. Aside from throwing Monster Meat, they will only appear in the spot of a defeated Evil Soldier after 3 turns have passed. If that spot is obstructed by any entity, the Dead Soldier will spawn on the next turn after 3 that the square is free.

Monster Ability

Dead soldiers will wander the floor ignoring Shiren, and chasing other Monsters to possess which will increase their level by 1. Possessing a level 4 monster will 'cure' the monster, removing all status effects and replenishing their full HP. Unless they are made 'Clear-Sighted' by a Herb of Sight thrown at them, Dead Soldiers cannot see Air Devil Family monsters and will therefore not chase or possess them. When interacted with, there is a chance that they will warp to a random location on the floor.

Non-monster entities such as Characters cannot be possessed. Shiren 1 DS Monsters Dead Soldier Possession Fail Message.png

Most physical attacks, even from a powerful weapon will only deal 1 damage. See Combat Strategy for details.

Effect when Sealed

Dead Soldiers can no longer possess and level up monsters. They will not chase other monsters and will now pursue Shiren, using melee attacks. They will never warp away when interacted with.

Combat Strategy

Physical attacks from many types of Weapon or with none equipped will only deal 1 damage to a Dead Soldier, even with 255 Strength. Multiple attacks of 1 damage each turn can quickly defeat a Dead Soldier before it flees, such as by becoming a Knifegator Family Monster.

They will however, take full damage from a Weapon with the Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Ghost.png (ghost) Seal from a Sickle Slayer. Throwing the weapon will also deal this damage. Note that equipped weapon seals do not apply when Shiren is transformed as a monster, but do apply in towns. There are many ways to damage a Dead Soldier, which, due to its low HP, are likely to instantly defeat it.

Methods of Dealing Fixed Damage

Dead Soldiers will only attack the player when Confused, Sealed or Blind and are therefore not a direct threat. They are more likely to have to possessed and leveled up another monster than to ever attack the player.

When interacting with a Dead Soldier, there is a chance that they will warp to a random location on the floor.

Monster type

Dead Soldier Family Monsters are Ghost-type, meaning that they will take 200% damage from an attack with a weapon with a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Ghost.png seal from a Sickle Slayer.

As a Ghost-type Monster, Dead Soldiers will also take damage from healing items when hit by them. This can be convenient as they do not have much HP, and a ghost seal may not be available.

Meat Strategy

Shiren cannot attack as a Dead Soldier, but interacting with monsters will cause Shiren to possess them, taking the form of that monster as if their Monster Meat was consumed.

Possessing the biggest physical threat in the room, or a monster with a useful ability can minimize potential dangers such as Dragons to defeat monsters from a safe distance, or Fluffy Bunny Family to replenish Shiren's health by 50 HP each turn.

Monster Meat Description

  1. Dead Soldier meat: Eat this to change into a Dead Soldier. Able to possess other monsters.
  2. Dead Veteran meat: Eat this to change into a Dead Veteran. Able to possess other monsters.
  3. Dead General meat: Eat this to change into a Dead General. Able to possess other monsters.
  4. Dead Shogun meat: Eat this to change into a Dead Shogun. Able to possess other monsters.

Spawn Locations

Dead Soldier Family monsters don't spawn naturally and only spawn on the squares where an Evil Soldier Family monster was killed. Therefore floors where an Evil Soldier can spawn are also floors where a Dead Soldier appear.

Trivia

  • Dead Soldier Family Monsters are one of the types of monsters that a Baby Tengu Family cannot masquerade as. To create a Dead Soldier, an Evil Soldier needs to be genuine.
  • When a Fluffy Bunny Family is possessed by a Dead Soldier, the 'cured' message appears as there is only one monster in the Fluffy Bunny Family.
