States or status conditions are a gameplay element in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. They can inflict Shiren, Monsters and characters via monsters, traps and items. They inflict and provide various positive and negative effects on Shiren and can make a world of difference when it comes to survival.

Many of these conditions can be cured by consuming Monster Meat and will stay removed after reverting back to Shiren if not re-applied.

States

Effects on Shiren

The following list happens only on the protagonist of the game, Shiren.

Neutral Normal ふつう You have no status ailments. You can move normally.
In Trouble ピンチ No effect. Occurs when Shiren's HP falls below 30% of the current maximum.
Negative Hungry 腹ペコ You current fullness is 0. You will lose 1 HP every turn.
Hit Point Drain HP減少 You will lose 1HP each turn for 40 turns.
Hypnotized 催眠 Forces random actions for one turn: throwing items (equipped or not equipped), unequipping weapons/armor, attacking in random directions, eating herbs, inserting items into jars, reading scrolls, and swinging staves.
No Natural Recovery 自然回復無効 Shiren will not naturally recover HP by walking around while effected. Can last for 40 turns.
Poisoned You lose 5 HP and 1 strength point. If inflicted with poison by a successfully thrown Poison Herb, you will also be slowed for 5 turns.
Postponed You warp above the stairs and become paralyzed until the effect wears off or are attacked.
Silent Prevents eating Riceballs, Herbs and Monster Meat, reading Scrolls, or speaking to anyone.
Slowed 鈍足 Monsters take 2 turns per 1 turn you take.
Hands Full You cannot pick up any items from the floor.
Positive Silent Movement 忍び足 Monsters that were originally sleeping will not wake up when in the same room as Shiren.
Poison-free 毒無効 You will be immune to strength-decreasing poison effects on the current floor.
Ever-full 腹へらず You won't lose fullness while on the current floor.
Auto Identify 拾い識別 For one entire floor, every item you pick up will be identified.
Wide awake 不眠 For one entire floor, Shiren will be unable to fall asleep.
Clear-Sighted よく見え Allows you to see Traps on the floor, secret pathways and invisible Monsters. Gained by eating an Herb of Sight.
Enhanced パワーアップ Attack power is increased. Shiren will retain the effect until ascending to the next floor.
Puzzled まどわし Monsters and Characters appear as Girl (Hallucination). The stairs, visible traps, and items lying on the floor appear as Miscellaneous Items#Flowers. You will be unable to talk to Characters while puzzled.
Trap Master Will allow Shiren to see, pick up, throw, and place traps. Monsters will now be affected by traps which, in turn, triggers an EXP multiplier. This multiplier increases by 1x if the monster trips another trap during it's next turn. This is called "chaining." When Shiren kills a monster with a multiplier, it will be applied to the EXP received. However, monsters directly killed by Shiren with no multiplier only give you 1 experience point each.

Effects on Shiren and Monsters

The following list happens on both Shiren and the targeted monsters.

Negative Riceball おにぎり Prevents the use of items. You lose the bonuses from your equipment, therefore your attack and defense will drop drastically. You can be also instant killed if you step on a Rotten Trap in this form. Cannot use special abilites or fly. Will keep their power and defense.
Paralyzed かなしばり Will not be able to do anything for a number of turns or until being hit by a monster. Will not be able to do anything until interacted with.
Immobilized カゲぬい You will be unable to move from the spot but will still be able to attack, and use items. Cannot move from the spot, but can still attack and use abilities.
Kigny (status) キグニ You lose control over Shiren as he wanders the floor, attacking any monster or Character around. Will attack any entity they see, Shiren is priority.
Confused 混乱 When confused, yellow birds appear above your head. If you attempt to move or attack while Confused, you will have no control over the direction it occurs in. However, items such as Staves and Arrows will still shoot in the direction you are facing, so it is possible to continue combat using these items while confused by turning Shiren to face the direction of the enemies. Will move and attack in random directions.
Asleep 眠り Prevents movement and actions for ~5 turns.
Sealed 封印 Prevents firing magic bolts from Staves and any special abilities if in a monster form. Prevents use of special abilities. Varies with monster type.
Blind 目つぶし When blinded, the screen turns black, forcing the player to navigate via the portion of the mini-map already uncovered. Will move until they hit a wall.
Positive Invisible 透明 Monsters will not attack or follow you. Cannot be seen by Shiren normally.
Double Speed 倍速 Shiren will be able to move or attack twice per turn e.g. for every movement or attack that a Mamel makes, Shiren will be able to perform two. Speed increases by 1 level. Only some monster families can attack at double speed.
Invincible 無敵 You will not lose HP to attacks for 20 turns. Will not lose HP to attacks for 20 turns.

Effects on Monsters

The following list happens only on monsters.

Effect State Description
English Japanese
Negative Deep Sleep パクスイ状 Immobilize monsters by making them fall into a deep sleep. When they wake, however, their speed will be 1 level faster, so be careful. Inflicts double speed on monsters affected.
Positive Scared おびえ状鳃 Monsters will run away from Shiren and not attack for 30 turns.
