The Flying Fowl monster family (Japanese: カラカラペンペン系, Karakarapenpen Kei) in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Flying Fowl (Japanese: カラカラペンペン, Karakarapenpen)
  2. Flutter Fowl (Japanese: パタパタペンペン, Patapatapenpen)
  3. Hover Fowl (Japanese: バババペンペン, Bababapenpen)
  4. Jet Fowl (Japanese: ゴゴゴペンペン, Gogogopenpen)

Monsters in the Flying Fowl Family resemble puffins with two-toed feet, small beaks, two tufts of head plumage, and smooth wings. Each level of monster has goggles over its eyes and is strapped into a harness that is connected to a motor behind the monster, which powers the propeller above itself, enabling itself to be constantly in the air. There are also markings on each side of the monster's neck, but this detail is barely noticeable. The color of the Monster's flesh depends on its level:

  • 1 - Sky blue
  • 2 - Olive green
  • 3 - red
  • 4 - black

Level 4 monsters in the Flying Fowl family have a slightly different color scheme than levels 1 - 3. At level 4, the color of the monster's harness, as well as its goggles, head plumage, and feet also become red, diverging from the usual brown that is seen in levels 1 - 3.

When attacking, Flying Fowl Family Monsters swoops forward and pecks their target. When using their special ability they deliver a 'charged spin attack' and bump into their target while spinning around.

Monster Ability

As Floating-Type monsters Flying Fowls are able to fly over water and chasms and are normally immune to traps.

Similar to the Rice Baby Family and Field Bandit Family, monsters from the Flying Fowl family are capable of altering items within the player's inventory. Every turn, there is a chance that these monsters will do a "Charged Spin Attack" and turn one of the held items into an Electrified Item, which depends on the monster's level. An Electrified Item can't be used, thrown, or removed from your inventory, will be permanently lost and will disappear on the next floor.

The ability to "zap" items differs slightly between Flying Fowl levels:

  1. Flying Fowls can Electrify Herbs that are not in Jars.
  2. Flutter Fowls can Electrify Herbs and Scrolls not in Jars.
  3. Hover Fowls can Electrify Herbs, Scrolls and Staves not in Jars.
  4. Jet Fowls can Electrify Jars. Any items inside the Jar will also be destroyed.

Effect when Sealed

When inflicted with the Sealed status, Flying Fowl Family Monsters can no longer fly over water or chasms and can no longer electrify Shiren's items. They are still normally immune to traps without reading a Super Trap Scroll.

Combat Strategy

Flying Fowls aren't especially dangerous in terms of physical combat, though understandably their attack, defense, and HP do increase with level. A reason for caution is that monsters from this family are able to Electrify your items. Therefore, if it is not possible to seal them to disable this ability, or to defeat them in one turn, Shiren can avoid contact with Flying Fowls so that items cannot be potentially electrified by using ranged attacks such as the ones listed below.

If Shiren happens to be adjacent to a Flying Fowl Family monster, and there are important items in your main inventory, which are possible to be electrified by the level of the present monster, these can be placed on the floor during combat to preserve them. At this point, Paralyzed the monster is also a valid course of action.

It would not be advisable to use Flying Fowl Family Meat to transform monsters into such, as this would create an avoidable threat to the player's own items.

Monster Type

Flying Fowl Monsters are Floating-Type Monsters, an attack from a weapon with a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Air.png seal from an Air Slayer will deal 200% of the normal damage.

Meat Strategy

While transformed, Shiren will be able to fly over water and chasms, which can sometimes be useful for avoiding monsters, locating Vaults or accessing Item Islands.

Shiren will not gain any special abilities that Flying Fowls family monsters are able to use while transformed.

Monster Meat Description
