The Dragon monster family (Japanese: ドラゴン系) in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Dragon (Japanese: ドラゴン)
  2. Sky Dragon (Japanese: スカイドラゴン)
  3. Ark Dragon (Japanese: アークドラゴン)
  4. Hell Dragon (Japanese: アビスドラゴン)

Dragons are plump smooth-skinned monsters with large wings on their back, perpetually flapping to sustain their flight. They have large pointed heads with scalene eyes and two pointed back facing horns atop their heads. As well as small two-clawed arms, and three-clawed legs, two front and one back, they also have a long tail that curls to the monster's side.

The color of the flesh of the monster's back, belly, and the secondary color of its horns and wings depends on its level:

  • 1 - Beige, grey, olive green
  • 2 - Beige, grey, sky blue
  • 3 - Beige, grey, magma orange
  • 4 - Gold, pink, purple

As with many other monster families, the level 4 monster's color scheme differs from levels 1 - 3. The monster's flesh, which was beige and grey in levels 1 - 3 is now a vibrant gold, with a pink belly. Perhaps to give the impression that the level 4 form is in a completely different league of power than the previous 3.

When physically attacking, Dragons raise themselves higher up into the air and headbutt their target with such force that they are covered in fiery energy, characteristic of objects hurling rapidly out of orbit and back to earth.

Monster Ability

As Floating-Type Monsters, Dragon Family Monsters are normally immune to Traps without having read a Super Trap Scroll. Because they are flying, they can move over water and chasms.

Dragon Family Monsters have the ability to breathe fire, which cuts corners and deals a fixed amount of damage that is not reduced by a Shields Shields.

Note: Dragon Family Monsters will only breathe fire when they intend to hit a target.

  • Level 1: Dragons can breathe fire in a straight line, which will fly indefinitely until it hits a wall or an entity. Deals 30 fixed damage.
  • Level 2: Sky Dragons can breathe fire at any entity in the same room or from one square outside of the room. Deals 40 fixed damage.
  • Level 3 - 4: Ark Dragons and Hell Dragons can breathe fire at any entity on the floor. Deals 50 and 60 fixed damage respectively.

Effect when Sealed

When inflicted with the 'Sealed' Status, Dragon Family Monsters can no longer fly over water or chasms, but will still be immune to Traps, and they can also no longer breathe fire.

Combat Strategy

Dragons are arguably the most dangerous monster in Shiren 1, evident by being the only monster to appear at just level 1 by the end of Table Mountain. In addition to their ranged fire ability which deals fixed damage, they are physically strong, with the level one monster already having 90 HP and dealing ~40 damage without a Shield.

This makes them popular candidates to throw a Scroll of Removal at.

When fighting dragons, there are two priorities, either prevent the monster from breathing fire by any means or minimizing the number of times that Shiren is hit by their fire.

Though, depending on your shield power, the fixed damage may be more tolerable than being attacked directly.

To become immune to all dragon fire, become an Inferno Family by consuming their Monster Meat. To become Invisible indefinitely, eat Air Devil Monster Meat, and slowly defeat monsters while unseen.

  • Level 1: If there are no other monsters in the room, move at diagonals to the Dragon so that they cannot aim their fire at Shiren, and they will come closer until their are in melee range of Shiren. They are less likely to breathe fire when they can physically attack Shiren.
  • Level 2: If inside a room, move out at least 2 squares into a hallway so the Sky Dragon will come within melee range of Shiren.
  • Level 3 - 4: Ark and Hell Dragons will breathe fire at Shiren from across entire floors so healing items are indispensable. Watch where the flames came from and estimate their location, use items to view all monsters on the floor, or quickly leave the floor.

Even with a Shiren 1 DS - Shield Seal Dragon.png seal from a Dragonward that will halve the fixed damage from dragon fire, Hell Dragons will still deal 30 fixed damage to Shiren. This is a list of items that can be helpful for defeating dragons, or for disabling them for easy defeat, or running away. Hell Dragons have one of the highest attacks in Shiren 1, both Ark and Hell Dragon fire deal less damage than their physical attack.

  • A supply of Chiropractic Jars is necessary, as Ark and Hell Dragons can breathe from across the floor, as well as dragons having extremely high physical attacks.
  • Dragon Herbs will deal ~68 - 75 damage, which is a decent proportion of any Dragons HP.
  • A Pain Sharing Staff: Use a Dragons' own attack or fire to damage itself or use this to defeat other monsters.
  • A Staff of Paralysis: Paralyze the Dragon indefinitely, to provide more turns for actions or to run away.
  • Staff of Postpone: Teleports the Dragon to the stairs to temporarily remove them.

Alternatively, they can be transformed into a more easily defeated form by successfully throwing Monster Meat, though this can miss and should not be relied on.

Caution

If Monster-Shiren is hit by explosions while an Inferno Family Monster, more of that level of Inferno will spawn from Shiren.

Monster Type

Dragon Family Monsters are Dragon-Type and Floating-Type, meaning that they will take 200% damage from an attack with a Weapon with a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Dragon.png seal from a Dragonkiller, or a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Air.png seal from an Air Slayer. Additionally, a weapon with both of these seals will deal 400% damage to a Dragon.

Note: Dragons will only breathe fire if they intend to hit their target. While Sky, Ark, and Hell Dragon fire will home onto their target and cannot miss, Dragon (level 1) fire can hit other monsters if they are between them and the target.

Meat Strategy

All Dragon levels can move over water and chasms. Dragon Family Meat, particularly levels 3 and 4, is one of the most useful Monster Meats in Shiren 1.

  • Level 1: Move into a hallway as a Dragon so that monsters follow Monster-Shiren in straight lines, then breathe fire to deal 30 fixed damage to most monsters. The fire can also cut corners. Breathe fire into hallways and rooms to check for monsters, in which more damage will be dealt than normally doing this with Arrows.
  • Level 2: Stand 1 square outside of rooms as a Sky Dragon and breathe fire into them to check for large quantities of Monsters as there are inside Monster Houses. If there are no targets, the fire will fly in straight lines and disappear when hitting a wall.
  • Level 3 - 4: Breathe fire in random directions to deal damage to any monster on the floor. Characters are not targeted unless they have been provoked into attacking Shiren. Facing in the general direction of the distance monster will cause the fire to hone onto them, the fire will take a long time to travel if it has targeted a monster, or will travel in straight lines and disappear when hitting a wall if there are no targets.
Caution

Inferno Family Monsters will level up by 1 each time they are hit by fire.
