The Soldier Ant (Japanese: 兵隊アリ) Monster Family in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:
Monsters in the Soldier Ant Family are anthropomorphic ants wielding a tall spear which it wields to attack or dig through walls. With colored armored plates over its head, upper chest, shoulders and feet, its underbelly, arms, legs, and face is white. As well as a large segmented abdomen, they have two short antennae on their heads, and while most of their face is obscured by their armor, two angry scalene eyes and small fangs are visible.
The color of the monster's armored flesh depends on its level as well as the color of its spear and eyes (details).
Level 4 monsters in the Soldier Ant Family have a slightly different color scheme than levels 1 - 3. Instead of an orange staff and eyes, both of which are now red.
Soldier Ants can tunnel through the walls of indoor caves at will, as if wielding an Fusion, and will do this naturally and when seeing Shiren.
When there are hallways that are unnaturally two squares wide, or long dead-end tunnels spanning the sides of the floor, it is a good indicator that there are Soldier Ants present
Solder Ants will no longer dig through walls when Sealed.
When Shiren is inaccessible to attack around corners, Soldier Ants may decide to destroy the wall creating the corner instead of pursuing Shiren that turn. This may be troublesome in Monster Houses as the hallway entrance will be widened for multiple monsters to attack Shiren at once.
With no outstanding melee attacks or abilities, Soldier Ants are basic monsters though stronger than Mamel Family and Chintala Family but weaker than Tiger Uho Family. Understandably, they become relatively more of a physical threat at higher levels, particularly 4 with an average attack of 30 and defense of 20.
Alternatively, low-level Soldier Ant Family Meat can be thrown to transform a Monster into a more easily defeated form, stripping it of its offensive and defensive capabilities and any special abilities. However, thrown Items can miss and so this decision should be made before the Monster is at close range in case of failure.
As a Soldier Ant, Shiren will be able to dig through walls infinitely, as if wielding an unbreakable Pickaxe. This can help Shiren access Vaults as well as digging shortcuts through the map to evade Monsters or to reach the Stairs.
There are some benefits to consuming any Monster Meat in general:
