Mutation Cave (Japanese: 変異小洞窟) is a side-dungeon in  Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2. It is unlocked after finishing the twelfth dungeon, Hyperspatial Boundary. Completing this dungeon will unlock the Spatial Mutation Cave.

Dungeon information

This dungeon has 51 floors, the last floor being that of a treasure room closed by a door and the Geomagnetic Pole allowing to return Oberfay. To open the door it is necessary to use a Key. It is not possible to use the Wanderer's Dig skill, a Pick-axe‎‎ or a Golden Pick-axe‎‎ to dig the walls and enter the room. Behind this door there are 9 Wandering Boxes. As it is not possible to bring items into this dungeon, a Key must be found or bought in the dungeon.

Upon entering this dungeon, each character in the party will have their level and skills reset, but they will keep their Subclass, any unlocked Blast Skills and increased inventory slots.

The design and music of the dungeon changes randomly each time the player moves from floor to floor, except on the last floor. It can use the design of any other dungeon in the game. The same design and music can be used several times in a row.

Some floors may not have walls. As a result, thrown items can disappear into the empty space between rooms, walls cannot be destroyed to create shortcuts, and flying monsters are able to find and fight you anywhere on the floor.

In this dungeon, Sigils and Scrolls are unidentified until used or identified with an Assess Scroll. In addition, all items (including equipment) can be Cursed when found in the Bewitching Dungeon Shop, on the ground, or in a Wandering Box. It is impossible to know that an unidentified item is cursed unless it is used or identified with an Assess Scroll, even if another item with the same effect was identified. However the price of a cursed item is 80% of the uncursed item, so it is possible to guess if an item is cursed in the shop.

Items and money cannot be brought to the dungeon. They will be stored at Lakeside Wharf and can be retrieved when you return to Oberfay by going back to the Lakeside Wharf. Since equipment can not be brought to the dungeon, a default equipment which depends on the Class of the character is provided to adventurers.
