Unidentified Items (Japanese: ???) is a game mechanic in Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. Some Items have generic names (in yellow) and no description when found. The player doesn't know what those items do right away, and there are two ways to figure it out: using an Identify Scroll on them, or trying them to see what they do. Players who figure out what an unidentified item does can give it a name from the menu. Excluding Swords and Shields, once an item has been identified, all occurences of it will be given its proper name, or a name given by the player.

Weapons and Shields

Their proper name is known, however it's unknown if their Weapon Strength or Shield Strength is changed. It's also unknown if they're Cursed, in which case the player would need an Uncurse Scroll to be able to unequip them.

Rings

Generic name. It's also unknown if they're cursed, in which case the player would need an Uncurse Scroll to be able to unequip them. In the case of the Strength Ring, if identified with an Identify Scroll, both the name of the ring and its Strength modifier (+3 or -3) will be revealed. However, other Strength Rings found by the player will not show their Strength modifiers. Players can still use Identify Scrolls on non-yellow Strength Rings to reveal this information.

Staves

Generic name. Amount of uses left is unknown. If identified with an Identify Scroll, both the name of a staff and its amount of charges will be revealed. However, other staves of the same type found by the player will not show how many uses they have left. Players can still use Identify Scrolls on non-yellow staves to reveal their amount of charges.

Herbs

Generic name. They get identified automatically when eaten. Only unidentified in the More Magic Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation..

Scrolls

Generic name. They get identified automatically when read. Only unidentified in the More Magic Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. The Chance Scroll will instead appear as a blank name in the inventory and cannot be read in this state. Consuming an Eyedrop Herb or equipping the Vision Ring(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. will reveal it.
