The X-Ray Scroll (Japanese: インパスの巻物) is a Scroll in Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. This Item appears in all dungeons and is very common. Reading it prompts the player to select an item in Torneko's Inventory, the nature of the selected item will then be revealed. This includes :

  • The proper name of the item, if it was called with one of the generic name the game gives to Unidentified Item, or if it was renamed by the player, even if it was already identified before being renamed.
  • The strength modifiers of Weapons, Shields and Strength Rings.
  • Whether a piece of equipment, weapons, shields and Rings, is cursed or not.
  • The number of charges Staves have.

Using an Identify Scroll on an item will also give all other items of the same type their proper names for the rest of the Adventure. However, for those other items, it will not reveal:

  • The Strength modifiers of weapons, shields and strength rings.
  • Whether a piece of equipment, weapons, shields and Rings, is cursed or not.
  • The number of charges staves have.

Identify Scrolls have a x% chance to reveal all unidentified item in Torneko's inventory instead of only the selected one.

Tips For Use

Although they are common in dungeons, players will never find enough Identify Scroll over the course of an Adventure to identify all items they find, especially in the More Magic Dungeon where most item are unidentified. The use of Identify Scrolls should be prioritized on items that are difficult to identify and/or risky to try using/equipping blindly:

  • Herbs and Seeds should never be the target of Identify Scrolls as they're revealed automatically upon consumption. Moreover there are so many type of herbs that it's unlikely for the identify scroll to be useful. Bear in mind that some herbs have negative effects, try them out away from any threats. The Poison Herb's effects can be negated with the use of one Antidote Herb.
  • Similarly Scrolls are revealed automatically upon reading so using Identify Scrolls on them should be avoided. There are fewer scrolls with negative effects than herbs, though using scrolls blindly can lead to wasting very powerful scrolls like the Repel Scroll. One safeguard to wasting scrolls is to make sure to have a sword and a shield equipped when trying one, if it ends up being a Bikill Scroll or an Upper Scroll then they won't be wasted.
  • The nature of most staves can be guessed by waving them once at a Monster with some exceptions. Using Identify Scrolls on staves should be avoided at most as possible, though it can still be useful to save one charge and reveal tricky staves like the Beat Staff that can easily be confused with the Prevention Staff. Make sure to wave staves on weak monsters since some staves have negative effect on Torneko or buff the monster.

Identifying weapons, shields and rings should be the priority for Identify Scrolls :

  • Weapons are the lowest priority. Their name is already revealed and, although they can be cursed, they can at most have a strength modifiers of - 3. This means that equipping a strong sword such as an Abacus is relatively safe. The player is also likely to find an Uncurse Scroll or a Bikill Scroll eventually to break the curse, in case a better weapon is found. More caution should be given for weak weapons such as Clubs, where getting cursed can make fighting difficult.
  • Identifying shields should be a priority as getting stuck with a cursed shield can doom an adventure. Not being able to remove a shield that can corrode when Horks start spawning will lead to repeated corrosion until the shield provides no defense to Torneko. This is especially important in the More Magic Dungeon where Plating Scrolls do not spawn, making Leather Shields and Mirror Shields the only option against Horks. Thus being able to switch to one those two shields when facing Horks is primordial to save more powerful shields from corrosion. Furthermore, regularly switching to a Leather Shield to save Belly is a common strategy that is made impossible when stuck with another shield.
  • Finally rings should always be indentified before equipping them. Getting stuck with a Return Ring or Awaken Ring will make an adventure much harder, while the Starve Ring will most likely lead to a quick failure. Moroever being stuck with a negative or bad ring prevents equipping powerful rings like the Belly Rings or Puppet Rings that are often necessary to suceed at the hardest challenges in the game.
