This Magnagates page is about their functionality in the Pokémon World. For Magnagates as a gameplay element in Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, see Gates:Magnagates.

Magnagates (Japanese: マグナゲート, Magnagates) are round temporary portals that connect two points in space in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. They appear in Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, its anime shorts and Part 3(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. They are the namesake of the aforementioned game and related media.

Blue Magnagates

Blue Magnagates connect the human world to the Pokémon world. One can be seen at the start of the Gates to Infinity story as well as the first anime short, appearing right below the hero, making him fall from the sky in the Pokémon world. Humans become Pokémon prior to entering a Magnagate and it is not clear if the transformation is related to the Magnagates themselves in any way.

Red Magnagates

Red Magnagates connect two points in the Pokémon world. Dungeon researchers like Umbreon, Espeon and Keldeo summon them by placing Entercards on a board to manipulate ley lines through the power of the sun and the moon. Magnagates disappear shortly after being summoned. If a Pokémon enters the Magnagate in time, it opens again at the destination and immediately disappears afterward. Entering a Magnagate usually leads to an unexplored dungeon that needs to be completed before the Magnagate can open at the destination, however, Keldeo discovered a way to make Magnagates that lead to the destination directly and that can also cross the sky. The scene where Umbreon and Espeon summon a full Magnagate in Post Town was adapted in the second anime short.

Trivia

  • A red Magnagate and a blue Magnagate appear on the cover art of Gates to Infinity nearby a group of Pokémon. A red Magnagate also appears as part of the game's banner in the Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu.
    • The cover of the Official Guide Book features an extended version of Gates to Infinity's cover art, revealing that the group is surrounded by a bigger white Magnagate. The back cover shows Ho-Oh and Lugia surrounded by a white Magnagate.
    • The cover of the Official Perfect Guide shows a similar group of Pokémon near a red Magnagate and a blue Magnagate, surrounded by a bigger red Magnagate. On the back cover, a red Magnagate can be seen on top of a picture of the Rough Rockery land type.
  • The loading icons used by Gates to Infinity are shaped like Magnagates, colored red, yellow, and blue, as well as green when loading content from the SD card.
  • The manipulation of the sun and the moon, which are also depicted on the Entercards, is potentially a reference to the Evolution Items for Espeon and Umbreon, the Heart of the Sun and the Heart of the Moon. However, the Entercards that depict the sun belong to Umbreon, while the Entercards that depict the moon belong to Espeon. It's unknown which of the two made which cards, though.
  • The four Magnagate dungeons visited during the story use different variations of the same theme, with Tyrian Maze using two. The theme is also included in the Rescue Team DX track "Gates to Infinity Medley" as a bridge between other songs.
