This Differences from the Super Famicom release page is about changes from the original Super Famicom release and the Nintendo DS remake. For differences between versions of Shiren 1 DS, see Shiren 1 DS:Version Differences.

The Nintendo DS remake of Shiren 1 contains numerous differences from the Super Famicom release of Template:GameTitle.

Major and Minor Changes

Monster

Monster Spawn Locations

  • Monsters have different spawn locations between the original SFC and DS releases of the game.

Bosses

Levels

  • The DS remake added a fourth level on most Monsters as in the original game, monsters only had three levels.

Locations

Towns

  • Players could enter the empty room that becomes the Mountaintop Town jar shop in the original game. This was removed on the DS remake.

Fay's Puzzles

  • All fifty of Fay's Puzzles are available from the start whereas before you can only do one puzzle per per adventure and cycle through when the player beats them all.

Fay's Final Puzzle unlock requirements.

  • The player was required to beat the Kitchen God and Scroll Cave to unlock Fay's Final Puzzle in the Super Famicom release. In the DS remake, the player only needs to visit them once but is first required to meet Naoki on floor 25 and Gaibara on floor 15.

Scroll Cave and Kitchen God

  • Shiren's stats were reverted back to default by entering them before. In the DS version, however, the player can retain his level for these dungeons as well as increase his maximum Fullness and Strength.
  • In the original game, the player needs to complete the Kitchen God if they met Naoki the Wandering Chef at floor 25 and Scroll Cave if he met Gaibara the Legendary Potter at floor 15 to unlock Fay's Final Puzzle(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. It was balanced so the player only need to visit both in the DS remake.
  • Trap Multiplier

Characters

  • In the SFC release, characters are not provoked when Shiren deals damage to them. They will not attack Shiren, and can still be talked to.
  • Originally stationary characters in the SFC release cannot be bypassed by holding B, and do not move. While all characters will pursue Shiren when provoked in the DS release.

Quests

New quests have been added in the remake.

Traps

Generated Spawns

  • Traps generally seen as more dangerous spawn earlier on in the main adventure in the SFC release than they do in the DS remake.

Creation

  • As a Mecharoid Family or when stepping on a Multiplication Trap, the player can change the trap placement by repeatedly making new ones that overwrite the old in the SFC release. This feature was removed in the DS remake.

Adventure Records

Scores

  • Scores are kept on a sign at Canyon Hamlet in the SFC release. For the DS remake, they are available from the top menu.

Save Files

  • The SFC release allows for three save files while the DS remake only allows one.

Shiren

  • Some gameplay balances were put to the protagonist of the game.
    • The maximum HP was raised from 250 to 999 HP in the DS remake.
    • The maximum level was raised from 70 to 99 in the DS remake.

Wagons

  • The wagons only traveled to the Bamboo Village and Mountaintop down and leave the player in front of the Kitchen God and Gaibara's pottery dojo respectively in the original game. In the DS remake, more town locations can be choosen.

Items

Cursed Armbands

  • Armbands provided their ability when cursed in the original game. This element was reverted in the remake.

Item ID'ing

  • Items are now auto-ID'ed when the player visits a town in the remake.

Item Upgrade level

  • The DS remake added maximum levels on items that could be leveled up to while the SFC release allowed any item to be leveled up to +99.

Doppelganger Staff

  • Doppelganger monsters would not revert to their leveled-up form upon defeating another monster before. It was reverted in the remake in addition to no longer being confused.

Kabra Reborn

  • The Kabra Reborn in the Super Famicom release is blue in color. When imported to the Nintendo DS, it was made to be more white in color. Additionally, the swastika hilt in the Japanese release was changed to a square shape in the western release.

    • The Division Jar(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. (Japanese: 分裂の壷) is absent from the DS remake.
    • The Jar Growth Scroll (Japanese: 壷増大の巻物) (English: Jar Growth Scroll) allowed the player to add a slot to a jar. It could be used as up to ten times for one jar. It was removed from the DS remake but makes a return in other games like Shiren 3.
    • The Echo Shield(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. (Japanese: やまびこの盾) is a shield that reflects magical attacks. It was removed from the DS remake.
    • The Levelholder Armband(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. (Japanese: レベル固定の腕輪) is an armband that fixes the player's current level and cannot decrease nor increase it from a trap or a status. It was removed from the DS remake.

Borg Mamel

  • The DS remake added the Borg Mamel Character character as a companion for clearing Fay's Final Puzzle.

Locations

Secret Passages

  • Running along walls in the DS remake will stop Shiren, indicating a secret passage.

Backtracking

  • The player can backtrack for the first fourteen floors of the main adventure; up to Cryptic Rock Valley This can allow the player to return back to Canyon Hamlet or the two towns in between to visit Shops and store items. It also makes for a quick escape when stealing from the Bamboo Village shop.

Rescue Reward items

  • For completing rescues, the player has a chance to be rewarded with a rescue-only item. One item, the Curseless Armband (Japanese 呪いよけの腕輪) went from being a random drop in the SFC release to rescue only reward in the DS remake.

Main Menu

  • Along with the new dungeons, the DS remake received matching Main Menu icons:

Rescues

Wi-Fi

  • The remake features Wi-Fi leader boards and rescues. This included friend codes, monthly, and all-time leaderboards.

Adventure Log

Ranking

  • In the DS remake, Ranking Chief(UT) - This is an unofficial translation., his leaderboards in Canyon Hamlet, and the animations that play at the end of each Adventure are absent.
    • In the original SFC release, Fay claims the room they're in is Ranking Chief's. In the DS version he says that the room was lent to him instead.
