Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is the sixth entry into the Mystery Dungeon franchise and the fifth series to be a crossover with another series, Pokémon. It is the most popular series in the franchise; previous crossovers had difficulty on bringing the Mystery Dungeon franchise outside of Japan.

About

The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series is published by Nintendo and co-developed by The Pokémon Company. It is currently the most popular sub-series worldwide. Tsunekazu Ishihara has worked previously with Chunsoft. One of the company's work was Tetris 2 + Bombliss, where Ishihara was the game's producer and met Koichi Nakamura, who was the game's director. Prior to the development of Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, Ishihara has played a few games from the Mystery Dungeon series, namely Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation., and was impressed with the genre's depth and quality. The game's development started after Seiichiro Nagahata and Shin-ichiro Tomie approached Ishihara and agreed with working on an easier version of the genre for the mainline Pokémon fans.[1] During the development of Red and Blue Rescue Team, Koji Malta, one of the programmers for these two games, who also previously contributed to EarthBound and Nintendo 64 Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 2 - Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion, stated the company went through bad business performance, as employees from Chunsoft would leave the company progressively due to this issue. The game's success not only helped in giving more popularity in the franchise, it also helped Chunsoft avoid bankruptcy.[2]
