This Ironhead Family page is about the Nintendo DS release. For the Super Famicom release, see Shiren 1 SFC:Iron-Head Family.

The Ironhead monster family (Japanese: アイアンヘッド系) in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer consists of:

  1. Ironhead (Japanese: アイアンヘッド)
  2. Chainhead (Japanese: チェインヘッド)
  3. Gigahead (Japanese: ギガヘッド)
  4. Deathhead (Japanese: デスヘッド)

These monsters resemble muscular anthropomorphic underwear-clad figures wearing wristbands of the same colour. Instead of a head on its shoulders, monsters in this family have a silver plate as a neck, connected to a chain that trails down its back and is attached to a round, one-eyed, single-horned head. This head, which is normally carried in the monster's left hand, is thrown by Ironhead monsters to attack with for their normal and special ability. The color of the monster's flesh; underwear, irises, and wristbands (details), depends on its level:

  • 1 - olive green flesh, indigo details
  • 2 - light blue flesh, grey details
  • 3 - red flesh, light green details
  • 4 - yellow flesh, orange details

In level 4 monsters, the color of the silver plate and chain becomes pale yellow, and the spike atop its head becomes blue, though these details remain silver and bronze in Ironhead Family monsters in levels 1 - 3.

Monster Ability

Ironhead Family monsters are able to attack within two straight squares of themselves, enabling them to attack Shiren or other monsters from a one-tile distance away. Using this Ability, Ironhead Family monsters can attack over lines of water or over chasms, but they cannot go over walls or around corners.

Effect when Sealed

When inflicted with the Sealed Status, Ironhead Family Monsters can no longer use their ability to attack Shiren from 2 squares away.

Combat Strategy

Monsters in the Ironhead Family are quite strong and can use their ability to attack Shiren before the player can damage them with a sword or other melee attacks. Since these monsters can only use this ability when in a direct, unblocked line with Shiren, the player can evade this by always keeping at a knight's move from the monster or attempting to lead the Ironhead Family monster around a corner such that the Ironhead Family monster would be able to reach melee range without hitting the player, as the Ironhead Family monsters' attacks cannot cut corners. Another way to circumvent this ability is to lead the monster into a hallway, where they will move until they are next to Shiren without using their long-range ability. Otherwise, a strong Shield or good healing capabilities are an option for fighting this type of monster. Alternately, they can be defeated from a distance with a variety of Items such as Staves and Arrows, or transformed into another monster using Monster Meat.

Caution

Ironhead Family Monsters can inadvertently increase their own level. When there is a monster between Shiren and the Ironhead Family type monster, the Ironhead will intend to attack Shiren and throw its head, however, the monster in between will be hit by the powerful attack. This may defeat weak monsters such as Baby Tengu Family or Fluffy Bunny Family and cause the Ironheads level to increase.

Monster Type

Ironhead Family monsters are Cyclops-Type monsters, meaning an attack from a weapon with a Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Cyclops.png Seal from a Cyclops Killer or a will deal 200% damage.

Meat Strategy

When consumed, the player will gain the ability to attack within 2 straight squares of themselves as well as a normal melee attack. This can be used to defeat monsters from a distance or to get a first hit on a dangerous enemy. This ability can also be used at the entrance of a Monster House to defeat unseen enemies just in front of the room's entrance. This ability works over water and air, but will not go over walls or around corners.
