A Portrait(NT) - This name was created by editors to describe something lacking a name. (Japanese: ???) is a small image that accompanies dialogue or menus in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. In most instances, it depicts the face a Pokémon expressing an emotion, although there have been occasional portraits that depict other things, such as objects.

Style

Portraits have used various styles across the series an have even made appearances outside of the main-series games. The other material uses the portraits taken from the games themselves.

Rescue Team

In their initial appearance, Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, they were made using 2D pixel art, and only for Pokémon that had story related dialogue.

Rescue Team DX

Nintendo Switch Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX still uses the same style as Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon, however, the portraits are now bigger and higher quality. Higher quality versions of portraits from the previous Gates and Super can be found in the game's files if the Pokémon is present in the game. The artwork used on the inside of the game box is a collection of a variety of portraits from the game, representing various emotions of the possible species for the Hero and Partner in the game.

Explorers Titles

Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness followed the same style as Rescue Team, but with more refined and detailed art, on top of giving every Pokémon in the game its own portrait, now also displayed in menus. The same portraits are used in the same way in Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.

Adventure Squad Titles

Wii Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing, Light, and Stormy Adventure Squad took a vastly different approach to portraits, as they aren't normal images, but instead simply display the 3D model of the Pokémon, showing its body in its entirety, with the same look as the overworld or dungeon models.

Gates to Infinity

Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity brought back the old style of showing only the face, while upgrading the graphics to use more colors and details. These new portraits appear to be made by posing the 3D model of the Pokémon, taking a picture of it, and editing the picture.

Super MD

Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon used the same style of portraits as Gates to Infinity, and includes all the portraits from the previous game.
