Wonder Mail (Japanese: ふしぎなメール) is a gameplay feature in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Wonder Mail allows players to receive Jobs, Items, or unlock Dungeons from a sub-menu accessible in the Top Menu.

History

Not much is known about Wonder Mail when it comes to lore and world building. Wonder Mail and Wonder Mail passwords are not acknowledged in-universe. As Pelipper often take the role of mail carriers in the series, it is implied that Wonder Mail are usually delivered, or possibly written by Pelipper.

Information

Wonder Mail is typically obtained through passwords, although in some games, it could also be received through the Internet, or sent and received to and from other players using wireless communication.

Wonder Mail passwords are distributed officially through means such as Official Websites, Side Games, Manga, or magazines.

In Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, and Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, a Wonder Mail password is tied to Jobs generated by the game. Players can share note these codes to share them with other players, to save them for later in case their Job list is full, or to use them in other playthroughs.

In those earlier titles, Wonder Mail passwords were longer and stored information for the game to decode and interpret. Starting from Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, the Wonder Mail system was reworked to be a simple match between the text inserted by players and random, otherwise meaningless strings of characters stored in the game's data as a preset list. Many of such preset passwords remained undistributed.

In Explorers of Sky, Wonder Mail is known as Wonder Mail S (Japanese: ふしぎなメールS) to distinguish it from its Explorers of Time and Darkness counterparts.

In Gates to Infinity, each Wonder Mail password gives either one or more Items.

In Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, each Wonder Mail password gives either one or more Items, with a select few that unlock Dungeons instead.

In Nintendo Switch Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX each Wonder Mail password gives either one or more Items, or a Job.

In Wii Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing, Light, and Stormy Adventure Squad, Wonder Mail was replaced with Friend Passwords(SN), which works similarly to the Wonder Mail passwords in Gates to Infinity, but rewarding Pokémon to befriend rather than Items.

One Wonder Mail password is tied to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness (anime). Another is tied to Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon - Go! Expedition Society Juniors!(UT) - This is an unofficial translation..

Unofficial Wonder Mail

Because in the Rescue Team and Explorers games, Wonder Mail passwords stored information for the game to decode and interpret, the Community was able to create Unofficial Wonder Mail passwords, as well as tools to create them. While Unofficial Wonder Mail typically takes the form of seemingly legitimate Jobs that don't have much of an effect on the games, in Explorers of Sky, the system has in some cases been exploited to gain access to otherwise inaccessible dungeons or hatch otherwise unobtainable Pokémon.
