The Tainted Queen (Japanese: 魔蝕クイーン) is the boss monster on floor 99 of the Tainted Path in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. It drops an unidentified
Special Drops
The Tainted Queen will drop a Kabra's Blade on defeat.
Occasions where the defeated Tainted Queen will NOT drop a Kabra's Blade:
- When transformed into another Monster using
Monster Meat. - When defeated after an Item is knocked away by a Cell Armor Family Monster.
- When defeated after an Item is stolen by a Thiefwalrus Family Monster.
- When defeated by a thrown
Scroll of Removal.
Combat Strategy
Sanctuary Scroll
By positioning a Sanctuary Scroll underneath the Tainted Queen by any means, it will be instantly defeated and will still drop a Kabra's Blade. Some ways to achieve this are listed below:
- Stand Shiren on the middle of 3 items placed along the side of a wall and the Tainted Queen behind Shiren. Throw the Sanctuary Scroll into the wall, which will then land where the Tainted Queen is standing.
- Switching Staff: Place the Sanctuary on the ground where Shiren is standing, then switch places with the Tainted Queen.
- Knockback Staff or Log Trap: Count 11 squares in a line from a side of the room (only the vertical distance will accommodate this), place the Sanctuary Scroll on the 1st square, and Shiren will stand on the 11th. Have the Tainted Queen stand on the 10th square and swing the Knockback Staff. Alternatively, place a Log Trap on the 10th square and coax the Tainted Queen to follow Shiren over the trap.
Trap Strategies:
By the use of a Trap Armband or by consuming Mecharoid Family Meat, Shiren will become a Trap Master and be able to use Traps against Monsters.
Because there are no naturally spawning traps on floor 99 of the Tainted Path, the use of a Trap Armband would require either a Scroll of Traps to be read, or for the player to have collected the necessary traps from previous floors. Therefore, Mecharoid Meat is a more convenient solution, as Shiren will be able to produce his own traps, with an added bonus of moving at Double Speed. Almost all of the traps listed can also function when thrown, however, this would inflexibly require a Trap Armband to be equipped, and even so, thrown Traps may also miss and land on the floor
Traps that can pacify the Tainted Queen
- Sleeping Gas Trap - Will fall Asleep and not attack for 5 - 10 turns.
- Immobilization Trap - Will not be able to move from that square for 5 - 10 turns, but can still attack Shiren if on an adjacent square.
- Spinning Trap - Will become Confused and will move randomly for 5 - 10 but may still attack Shiren.
- Slowness Trap - Will move at half speed permanently.
- Dream Gas Trap - Will cause the Tainted Queen to be scared and move away from Shiren for 5 - 10 turns. It also won't attack Shiren in this state.
Traps that can deal high damage to the Tainted Queen:
Neither Mecharoid Meat nor a Trap Armband is necessary for this technique, but a way for the trap to be present on the floor is required. For these techniques, items with high healing capabilities such as a Chiropractic Jar can be useful if a Shield with a Blast Rune is not available.
- Landmine Trap - Will always deal damage equal to approximately half the current HP of the Tainted Queen.
While the damage dealt by this trap will decrease exponentially with the number of times it damages the Monster, using it once or twice will deal ~675 damage, and using it five times will deal ~871 damage out of a total 900 total health. Caution should be taken, because Monster-Shiren may be caught in the blast radius when the trap is triggered, and while transformed, equipment seals do not apply, therefore the effect of any Blast seal will be negated and the full explosion damage will be taken. However, if the trap is triggered by Shiren in its original form, while the Tainted Queen is within the blast radius, any Blast seal will apply, and the player should heal if necessary.
- Big Landmine Trap - When triggered by the Tainted Queen, will leave it at 1 HP, however, as stated above, without a Shield with a Blast seal, Shiren will also be left at 1 HP and will be at risk of being killed in the next turn.
- To avoid taking damage, the trap can be thrown at the Tainted Queen, but as with all thrown items, it has a chance to miss. Using a Trap Armband, Traps can be brought from previous floors into the boss room on floor 99.
A Big Landmine Trap also has the potential to instantly defeat the Tainted Queen, see Instant Death Trap Strategies below:
Instant Death Trap strategies:
Defeated Tainted Queen will drop a Kabra's Blade
- When defeated by a Pitfall Trap.
- When defeated by a Hunger Trap.
- When hit once by the blast radius of a Big Landmine Trap. The Tainted Queen has to be adjacent to the trap, and Shiren has to be the one who triggers it. This option does not require a Trap Armband or Mecharoid meat to function, though it does require a Big Landmine Trap to be spawned by some means. If this method is carried out while a Trap Armband is still equipped, the Tainted Queen will not instantly die, but be left at 1 HP.
While the Tainted Queen is transformed as a Riceball, the above situations will still cause it to drop a Kabra's Blade.
Defeated Tainted Queen will NOT drop a Kabra's Blade
- When changed into a Riceball, then defeated by a Rotten Trap.
- When defeated by a Rotten Trap a Rotten Riceball will drop instead.

Trivia
- With a trap multiplier of x20, defeating the Tainted Queen awards the highest possible amount of Experience possible from one monster in Shiren 1 DS at 311,100.
- Traps can't be created or placed on the spot where the Tainted Wing drops.
- Defeating the Queen in a different position, or while Shiren is standing where the Tainted Wing drops, yields no different effect, as both are displaced by the Tainted Queen's defeat cut-scene.
