Shiren 1 DS - Naoki.png

Naoki and The Cliffs (Japanese: ???) is a quest in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, centering around Mountaintop Town.

After being betrayed by the Head Chef of the famous restaurant, Mountaintop Town#Restaurant' in Mountaintop Town the owners of the restaurant were forced to open up a new restaurant at the far end of town, The Cliffs Restaurant. Without a trained chef however, the food is atrocious and the restaurant is in need of good publicity. It's a good thing Shiren happened to run into a certain 'wandering chef', though Naoki the Wandering Chef won't work for free.

Location: Table Mountain floors 1 - 2, Mountaintop Town
Requirements: Completion of Gaibara's Pottery side quest, 10,000 Gitan paid in parts,
Minimum Duration: 5 adventures to unlock free meals, 6 to use, 7 to unlock Kitchen God and/or Scroll Cave
Rewards:

Required for:

  • Unlocking the Kitchen God dungeon.
  • Unlocking the Scroll Cave dungeon.

How to Complete

Steps are organised to complete the quest in minimal adventures.

First Adventure

First Adventure - Meeting Naoki
First Adventure - Meeting Gaibara

Naoki the Wandering Chef

Find Naoki on floors 1 - 2 of Table Mountain. He will give you a Bufu's Staff[0] to obtain some Monster Meat Meat for him. (You can obtain unlimited Bufu's Staves [0] from Naoki by meeting him in this state on different occasions and never giving him any Mamel Meat.)

  • Throw the Bufu's Staff at a Mamel to turn it into Meat, collect it and give it to Naoki. He will cook Shiren a dish of 'Roasted Mamel Tail', which you can choose to eat, gaining multiple positive status increases.
Roasted Mamel Tail:

He will accept Mamel Meat obtained by any means.

Gaibara the Legendary Potter

Reach Mountaintop Town and enter the first lower right building where Gaibara and Saruyama are.

  • Agree to give Gaibara the jar in your inventory. You will lose the jar permanently, but this event is required to continue this quest and the Gaibara's Pottery quest.

Second Adventure

Second Adventure - Visit The Peak

In Mountaintop Town, there is now a line waiting outside The Peak for its reopening. The people say that a new restaurant has opened on the cliff in the north-east of the town, but the location and food are terrible.

  • Enter the building on the cliff and listen to the owners argue, before serving Shiren. Choose one of the menu options. If you have the amount of Gitan of the price, you will pay that amount, otherwise Shiren will receive the meal for free.
    • Egg Thing Noodles 300 Gitan
    • Gaze Yakisoba 400 Gitan
    • Roast Walrus 500 Gitan

All three meals are equally disgusting, and will cause the same negative effects:

  • Leave current HP at 1
  • Decrease current Strength by 2
  • Set current Fullness to 10

Shiren will then leave the restaurant.

Third Adventure

Third Adventure - Escort Naoki

Find Naoki on floors 1 - 2 of Table Mountain again, and he will mention that he has work to do in Mountaintop Town. However, the journey there is dangerous and he asks for Shiren's help.

  • Escort Naoki to Mountaintop Town. He does not attack, but is targeted by Monsters so you must protect him. Once you reach Bamboo Village, you can take the Wagons to Mountaintop Town if Table Mountain has already been completed.

Naoki will thank Shiren and leave when you reach Mountaintop Town. Walk to The Cliffs Restaurant and Naoki will storm outside, demanding to be paid well for his services. Naoki demands 10,000 Gitan in total, and Koppa will repeat himself until you agree to pay. Naoki and the three owners will then go inside the restaurant. Over multiple adventures you can talk to Naoki in the restaurant to either pay:

  • All of currently held Gitan
  • Half of currently held Gitan
  • Pay no Gitan

(If Shiren is holding more Gitan than required to pay and selects the first option, only the amount required will be paid.)

Pay all 10,000 Gitan to move to the next event.

Fourth Adventure

Fourth Adventure - Eat at The Cliffs

Enter The Cliffs to see the restaurant is doing well. Shiren will be offered a free random meal, which provides various positive effects.

  • Try to leave the restaurant and Naoki will mention that they must overtake The Peak.

He suggests having an important person eat at The Cliffs. They ask Shiren if they know any influential people.

  • Answer 'Gaibara'.
Fourth Adventure

The other two options: "Me" and "Old Riceball Man", prompt humorous dialogue but the options are ultimately presented again.

Toshio devises a plan to have Gaibara eat at The Cliffs, and gives Shiren a letter to deliver.

  • Visit Gaibara and Saruyama and enter a conversation, they will then storm outside.
  • Go back to The Cliffs and talk to the two people outside.
Fourth Adventure

To attract Gaibara, Toshio's plan was to hold an event where customers can break as many jars as they like if they don't like the food.

  • Talk to Toshio, the first chef behind the counter.

Gaibara finally arrives and is eager to vent his rage on the supply of jars. While Saruyama enjoys the food, Gaibara is about to throw a jar, but stops, demanding to see the owner of the restaurant. Discovering that Naoki was the one the cooked his meal, Gaibara complements it, though he can also taste Naoki's greed. Gaibara urges Toshio and his family to do the cooking from now on. Before he leaves, he says that he will make some dishes for the restaurant.

Naoki leaves the restaurant, followed by Shiren, and Gaibara's words make him realize how arrogant he's been, so he decides to keep working hard.

  • Enter The Peak Restaurant in the center of town.

Turns out The Peak heard about The Cliffs jar event and tried to do the same thing, except Gaibara is throwing plates one after another. Turns out the Head Chef at The Peak was scamming people with cheap ingredients, causing the decline in food quality, and as everyone leaves the restaurant, he sits on the floor in shock. Talking to Naoki near The Cliffs isn't necessary to advance the quest.

Fifth Adventure

Fifth Adventure - Visit The Cliffs
  • Go to The Cliffs and collect the Bufu's Staff [4] Naoki left as a gift.
  • Visit Gaibara.

When you see the two people talking outside the closed restaurant, Gaibara's behavior will return to normal on the next adventure.

After this adventure, he will have given The Cliffs the new dishes, as they can serve Shiren food from the next adventure.

From the next adventure onward, you can now have a free meal at The Cliffs on every adventure

Sixth Adventure

Nothing happens on this adventure, if you have already completed Table mountain, and Gaibara's Pottery, you may choose to skip this adventure entirely by selecting 'give up'. Gaibara's behavior has now returned to normal and is no longer throwing dishes.

  1. If the Gaibara's Pottery quest is not completed, regardless of Table Mountain's completion, Gaibara will be producing and throwing various jars depending on the stage of the quest seen by the player.
  2. If the Gaibara's Pottery quest was already completed, as well as Table Mountain, this will be the last adventure that Gaibara is accessible outside of a dungeon, and he will still be offering information about the Melding Jar. Saruyama will be outside the building.

Seventh Adventure

If any one of Gaibara's Pottery quest, Naoki and the Cliffs quest or the main adventure-Table Mountain, have not been completed, nothing will happen.

Kitchen God

Seventh Advenure - Kitchen God

As long as Gaibara has had at least one adventure to offer information about the Melding Jar (Sixth Adventure), Naoki and the Cliffs, and Table Mountain are all complete when going to Bamboo Village, the citizens are in shock as lightning has hit the shrine to the Kitchen God, Bufu behind the village. The Shopkeeper's Wife will tell Shiren that someone went down there, looking for rare Meat, who claimed to be a 'wandering chef'. Koppa will assume it's Naoki and wonders if they should follow him.

You can now enter the Kitchen God dungeon

Scroll Cave

Seventh Adventure - Scroll Cave

As long as Gaibara has had at least one adventure to offer information about the Melding Jar, Naoki and the Cliffs, and Table Mountain are all complete, Gaibara will have has descended into the cave within his house. Saruyama will now remain inside the building.

You can now enter the Scroll Cave dungeon

Trivia

  • If Shiren eats the bad food from The Cliffs with less than 10 current fullness, it will be raised to 10.
