Shiren 2 Source Book - Shiren reading a scroll.

Scrolls (Japanese: 巻物) are a type of consumable Item in the Shiren the Wanderer Series. Scrolls are often found on the floors in Dungeons and Shops. When read, they can provide a variety of effects that range from beneficial to extremely dangerous; both for Shiren, Asuka, Sensei and Monsters.

Blank Scrolls

Easily the most versatile of Scrolls is the Blank Scroll, which first appeared in Shiren 1 SFC in 1995. A blank scroll can be used to write any previously read scroll's name on it, thus creating that scroll in a moment of need. A common mistake by new players is to write an Air Bless Scroll or an Earth Bless Scroll, which can be used to power up their weapon or shield. However, it's far more sensible to write a Scroll of Removal, Escape Scroll, Scroll of Need, Jar Growth Scroll and so on.

In some games, depending on the Water Mechanics, and the Blank Scroll Mechanics, it's possible to turn other scrolls into Blank Scrolls. In Shiren 3 Wii a scroll dropped into a waterway can be retrieved, wherein it will be turned into a Soaked Scroll. When it dries out, it'll be a Blank Scroll. In Shiren 1 DS scrolls dropped in waterways will be lost, and in Shiren 5 Vita, they'll turn back into the original scroll upon being dried out.
