Fusion, also known as Synthesis (Japanese: 合成) is an Item gameplay mechanic in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995.

Fusion can combine Weapons, and Shields and fuse their Upgrade Values, and Runes. This is often a requirement to clear challenging Dungeons.

Staves can also be combined, but they have to be two of the same type of staff. For example; a Lightning Staff [5] and a Lightning Staff [7] will result in a Lightning Staff [12], and a Lightning Staff [5] and a Bufu's Staff [3] will only waste two Jar slots.

Some games also allow combine Armbands to be fused as well. See: Fusion Mechanics for more information.

Fusion is primarily achieved through one of two methods.

Melding Jar

The first method, and by far the most common is the Melding Jar. The Melding Jar can combine weapons, shields, staves, and armbands to other items of their type.

Cross-Mixing

The second method, Cross-Mixing, is a type of fusion using the Mixer Family and the mini-Mixer Family.

By consuming Mixer Meat and walking over items, or throwing them into a Mixer's maw, they can be fused as with a Melding Jar. Unlike a Melding Jar, however, cross mixing allows runes to be obtained from sources they normally wouldn't be; such as a Riceball or an Ice Scroll.

Scroll

s

The third method, and by far the most obscure, are the Fusion Scroll and the Armband Fusion Scroll which were exclusive to the 2000s cell-phone titles(s).

The Fusion scroll is used to fuse a weapon or shield to the one Shiren has equipped, and the Armband Fusion Scroll is used to synthesize Armbands.
