Draft:Super MD:Grounded
This article is a draft relating to |
Grounded is a term used to describe a Pokémon that's on the ground or in the air. It decides whether the Pokémon is able to be hit by damaging Ground-type moves

Ground-type Immunity
A Pokémon's grounded state does not actually determine whether that Pokémon is affected by damaging Ground-type moves. Instead, immunity to Ground-type moves is always decided by type matchups (controlled by type, ability, and Status Conditions). For example, a Flying-type Pokémon under the effect of Ingrain still won't be damaged by Ground-type moves. Having or gaining the Flying type, Levitate ability, or the Magnet Rise and Telekinesis status effects will make that Pokémon immune to damaging Ground-type moves. This immunity can only be removed with the grounded status condition and the effects of Gravity.
Grounded Pokémon
All Pokémon that are not ungrounded are grounded by default. For Pokémon that are ungrounded, there are a few effects that will negate their ungrounded state, making them grounded. Grounded Pokémon are vulnerable to anything that affects the ground, except for Ground-type moves in some cases. There are different severities of groundedness.
Low Severity
These two ways of grounding an ungrounded Pokémon are lower risk and last for a short period. These effects also don't affect immunity to Ground-type moves and mobility.
| Name | Effect | |
|---|---|---|
| English | Japanese | |
| Ingrain | If the user is Flying-type, levitates, or is under the effects of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis, Ingrain will override the ungrounded state these effects provide and ground the Pokémon. Magnet Rise can still be used while ingrained (and before the effect); Telekinesis can be applied to a Pokémon before it becomes ingrained, and both effects will coexist. If the user is already ingrained, Telekinesis is guaranteed to fail to affect the Pokémon. | |
| Roost | The Pokémon loses its Flying-type designation for the rest of the turn. If the Pokémon isn't being granted immunity to Ground-type attacks (via Levitate, Magnet Rise, or Telekinesis), then it will be susceptible to Ground-type moves, including all other effects that affect Pokémon on the ground. | |
High Severity
These two ways of grounding an ungrounded Pokémon are higher risk and last for a longer time. These effects will also remove Ground-type immunity and flying mobility.
| Name | Effect | |
|---|---|---|
| English | Japanese | |
| Gravity | During high gravity, Flying-type Pokémon, those with Levitate, in the middle of using Fly, Bounce, Sky Drop, and under the effect of Magnet Rise and Telekinesis, become grounded. After the two-turn moves and status conditions mentioned get cancelled early, those moves will become unusable, along with Jump Kick, High Jump Kick, Splash, and Flying Press. All Pokémon on the floor will be susceptible to any Ground-type moves and be affected by all effects that are on the ground. It is impossible to ignore or reverse this effect. | |
| Smack Down | If a Pokémon is Flying-type or has the Levitate ability, that Pokémon will get smacked out of the air and get the grounded status. Hitting a non-Flying-type and non-levitating Pokémon with this move that is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis status conditions won't ground them but will end the status early. A Flying-type or levitating Pokémon will also lose their immunity to Ground-type moves. If a Pokémon has Levitate but it's disabled with Gastro Acid, the Pokémon won't be grounded. This status can be ended early by using Fly, Bounce, Sky Drop, or Magnet Rise. Using Telekinesis on a Pokémon with the grounded status will fail to affect the Pokémon. | |
Ungrounded Pokémon
All Pokémon that are not grounded are ungrounded through a few effects, provided that they're not being forcefully grounded in some way. Flying types and Pokémon with the ability Levitate are considered ungrounded. Ungrounded Pokémon are unaffected by anything that affects the ground.
| Name | Effect | |
|---|---|---|
| English | Japanese | |
| Magnet Rise | It gives the user the Magnet Rise status, giving the Pokémon immunity to Ground-type moves as well as making them ungrounded. | |
| Telekinesis | This move suspends a Pokémon in the air (if they're not ingrained), making them ungrounded, and the status itself grants immunity to Ground-type moves. A Pokémon affected by Telekinesis specifically is not immune to Arena Trap, despite being ungrounded. This is likely because Arena Trap isn't coded to ignore Pokémon under Telekinesis rather than this status failing to make the Pokémon immune to the ability. [Research required] | |
Effects of Being Grounded
Pokémon that are grounded are impacted by effects that affect the ground, those effects being:
- Rototiller
- the effects of terrain
- the Arena Trap ability.
Ungrounded Pokémon are immune to all of these effects (Telekinesis doesn't grant immunity to Arena Trap).
Ground-type moves unaffected by Groundedness
Some Ground-type status moves are not subject to the usual immunities of the Ground-type. These moves are:
- Mud Sport (This move targets the floor itself)
- Sand Attack
