Meta:Fan service

Fan service (alt. Fanservice) (Japanese: ファンサービス, fan sābisu) is a nod from creators to fans, often, but not limited to racey and sexual in nature. Fan service may include references to past works, inside jokes for long-time fans, or the introduction of characters and plot points that offer no other purpose to the media.

Shiren the Wanderer

Female Characters

Most of the adult female characters in the Shiren the Wanderer series are often depicted as being busty, and wearing extremely skimpy clothing. Such as Princess Suzune and Millie. Oryu the Blinder is one such character whose outfit was made more revealing over time. The most notable exception among the female cast is Asuka, and this is likely due to her being introduced at the age of 14 in  Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 2 - Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion.

Oryu the Blinder

The most prominent example of fan service in the Shiren the Wanderer series) is Oryu the Blinder (Japanese: お竜, Oryū). Oryu was originally drawn in a Qi pao with a dragon pattern on it, her outfits were later changed to be more revealing, prominently displaying her breasts since Shiren the Wanderer: Flowers Dancing in the Golden Town Amteca (2004). Other media, such as Mystery Dungeon - Shiren the Wanderer DS: Comics Anthology Special and ^Pachinko CR Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer: Princess Suzune and the Tower of Slumber also place extra emphasis on her bust.

The Borg Mamel

The Borg Mamel (Japanese: ボーグマムル) is another example of fan service. The Borg Mamel, as the name implies, is a robotic Mamel. It first debuted in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer DS in 2006. It doesn't offer anything to the plot, and only serves as a secret, bonus unlockable ally after the player has beaten the game and cleared the most challenging dungeon, Fay's Final Puzzle.

Returning Characters

As with other Mystery Dungeon titles, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is full of returning characters or characters making cameo appearances. While some fans claims it's only fan service, evidence suggests otherwise.

One example of a returning character that's strictly fan service, as she offers nothing to the plot or gameplay is Shiny Celebi returning in  Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. She made her debut in the sequel title  Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness and has been a recurring character, appearing in 3 other titles since her debut. However, Rescue Team DX is the only one where she didn't have anything to offer as a character.
