This page serves the purpose of documenting the contentious ownership of the rights to the Torneko's Great Adventure series, which are rumored to have previously been held by Chunsoft, until they were sold to Square Enix to prevent The Near Bankruptcy of Chunsoft. The claim seems to originate from the 2004 2channel Leak, and several pieces of evidence support this claim. It's believed that Chunsoft, later Spike Chunsoft sold the rights to the Dragon Quest Mystery Dungeon series to Square Enix, but retains the rights to the Torneko's Great Adventure series.
Possible Evidence
- A "Did You Know Gaming" video claims that Dragon Quest games weren't published on them, because Enix was working with a Nintendo Power competitor instead.[1] Torneko 1 was released on Nintendo Power rewritable cartridges and was among the first titles to be released; implying Chunsoft may have owned the rights to the series.
- Chunsoft sold Torneko's Great Adventure guide books on their website, the One Click Content Shop; including a fan book and merchandise giveaways relating to the series.[2][3] The shop was closed down when they were experiencing financial difficulties, and when their new SEGA-hosted shop, Chun. was started, Torneko games and merchandise were absent.
- Spike Chunsoft published "streaming guidelines" for Torneko's Great Adventure on September 19, 2022, implying they still have the rights to the series.[4]
- Keisuke Sakurai said to ask Square Enix about reviving
World of Dragon Warrior: Torneko: The Last Hope in a 2024 interview.[5]
